The Nurse Manager is responsible for managing the administrative and clinical activities of the nursing unit(s). The Nurse Manager functions within the limits of the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, South City Hospital, and Nursing Services policies and practice guidelines.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains the ability to perform the role of Staff Registered Nurse and Administrative Supervisor, meeting all performance criteria established for the unit.
Reviews and revises job descriptions annually or as necessary to ensure that they are accurate and complete for positions within own unit(s) and ensures performance of staff is consistent with the descriptions. Interviews and selects staff for own department in coordination with Human Resources, ensuring that all established and legal recruitment policies and practice guidelines are followed.
Provides appropriate leadership and supervision for staff and promotes an environment in which staff can work effectively and cooperatively. Communicates appropriate departmental as well as hospital and hospital information to staff through monthly department staff meetings, sharing administration memos when appropriate, inter-office memos/communications, etc.
Maintains awareness of employee performance problems and manages their resolution in the most effective manner ensuring expected standards of performance are communicated to the employee. Conducts performance evaluations of staff according to established procedures within appropriate time frame.
Coordinates and monitors the educational activities and competencies of all employees in the unit(s) by planning staff education and teaching, and monitoring the attendance at unit meetings, C.E. and in-service programs. Coordinates the orientation of new staff including the assignment of preceptor and completion of orientation booklet and provides training to present staff to ensure personal development as well as compliance with various regulatory guidelines.
Acts as a liaison between the unit(s) and other hospital employees, patients, families, visitors and physicians as appropriate, ensuring the assistance provided is appropriate, helpful and reflects the positive attitudes and philosophy of the Hospital.
Prepares and manages fiscal budget and other department records, reports and statistics including but not limited to R/A reports, payroll time sheets, etc., ensuring all paperwork is accurate, thorough and timely in accordance with established practice guidelines.
Prepares short and long range planning recommendations for the unit(s) including recommendations for new equipment, capital expenditures, and/or new services, ensuring that recommendations are thorough, timely, accurate, cost effective and supportive of the goals, philosophies, policies and mission of South City Hospital.
Establishes efficient and effective unit policies, practices, procedures and work rules which are consistent with the policies and philosophies of South City Hospital. Utilizes and promotes familiarization with quality vision statement guidelines and practices.
Actively participates on various committees relative to own unit(s) functions and responsibilities, and/or cross department/service performance assessment and improvement activities as requested, or as appropriate to meet the needs, mission and organizational plans of the hospital.
Establishes accurate and effective systems for monitoring all departmental resources and services ensuring that established controls are reflective of the hospital's overall organization and approach. Keeps Director of Nursing informed of department activities, needs, problems and overall direction of unit resources and services.
Maintains awareness of high volume, high risk and problem areas. Develops and maintains on-going quality improvements within the unit(s) involving appropriate staff members, reporting results and utilizing the results to determine appropriate course of action.
Maintains safe working environment, equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulatory agencies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing program; BSN preferred
- 2 to 5 years clinical experience
- Previous Assistant Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse experience required.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri.
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) required within 12 months of obtaining position, current SAH employees as of August 2016 must obtain CSPDT within 6 months.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Completion of CPR.
