Well known and respected non-profit in the San Jose area is hiring a Bilingual in Mandarin Domestic Violence Advocate for their shelter. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and help those in need. We are offering a generous salary and full benefits for this opportunity.
The Advocate provides culturally competent support to shelter residents and non-residential survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. All services are survivor-defined and trauma-informed. This person also assists with volunteers, community outreach, and general administration. The advocate position can have different focus areas: Family, Legal, Housing and Crisis.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide advocacy services, crisis counseling, support groups, and other activities that increase survivor safety and help them meet their goals.
- Provide case management, meet regularly with clients to support case plan accomplishments
- Coordinate with other advocates, providers and/or other service agencies to facilitate referrals and connections.
- Provides coverage for 24-hour crisis hotline, online chat service SafeChatSV, shelter and office. Assess immediate crisis needs of clients and address appropriately.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records.
- Provide emergency on-call response as needed.
- Support clients in navigating the civil and legal systems including assistance with court accompaniment, social services advocacy, translation and interpretation, job and housing search support, and other supportive service
- Conduct shelter client assessments and intakes, orient clients to shelter and house rules, oversee house security, facilitate problem solving for in-house conflicts and crises.
- Attend collaborative meetings and community events as a representative of the program and agency.
- Assist with data compilation, submits monthly client data forms that are required for grant deliverables.
- Assist with community outreach regarding domestic violence and human trafficking; this may include support of presentations, outreach events, media interviews, and/or the development of multilingual collateral.
- Oversee and support volunteers with training and orientation and monitoring assignments.
- Provide survivors and their children with transportation, as needed
- Complete other duties and related projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, behavioral sciences, other related fields or equivalent working experience.
- One year of professional experience working with survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and/or trauma preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks while also being a team player.
- Ability to work in a flexible environment including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Committed to program’s anti-violence mission and able to adhere to confidentiality requirements around client information.
- Must complete 40 hours of state-mandated domestic violence advocacy training.
- Sensitive and able to work with diverse communities in terms of race, ethnicity, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, etc.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Valid CA Driver’s License, vehicle for agency travel and current automobile insurance
- Fluent and able to provide all services in an Asian language or Spanish and English, preferred
