Special Education Teachers
Solterra Academy is searching for Special Education Teachers who are responsible for a self contained classroom, and development and implementation of Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for each student assigned to their class. They are responsible for planning and providing engaging, differentiated academic lessons for all subjects. Teachers work closely with primary therapists, related services, and administration to effectively address all aspects of the students' program for optimal success. It is the teachers' responsibility to provide a safe and structured school environment for all students through the effective implementation of TCI and PBIS practices. In collaboration with their assistant principal, teachers are responsible for direct supervision of their classroom's support staff.
o Prepare students' individual goals and objectives in SMART format.
o Implement the IEP as approved by the PPT.
o Submit report cards and IEP progress marks by due dates, proofing and editing as needed.
o Develop system to track student progress on IEP goals.
o Conduct academic assessments three times a year (i.e. Star 360) to track student progress and inform IEP goals and objectives.
o Prepare for and participate in PPT's.
o Prepare for and participate in Team Meetings.
Academic Instruction and Support
o Develop written lesson plans and implement engaging, differentiated academic lessons that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards during all subjects within the classroom.
o Develop and implement appropriate assessments of student learning to inform instruction and maintain grade book.
o Coordinate scheduling of classroom schedules and activities.
o Daily communication with parents/guardians via home notes, e-mails, or phone calls.
o Maintain an up-to-date substitute folder with at least three days of detailed lesson plans.
o Administer medications in the absence of the school nurse when on field trips, job placements, or any other off-site activity.
o Implement PBIS practices with fidelity.
o Implement TCI strategies to support students emotionally and behaviorally.
o Implements students' BIPs throughout the school day.
o Demonstrate the ability to set limits and maintain personal boundaries.
o Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions with students/families.
o Effectively use patience and therapeutic tone in day-to-day interactions with students.
o Complete and Review all necessary BIRs and Restraint/Seclusion Documentation in a timely fashion.
o Oversee the collection of data on student performance as specified by members of the primary team.
o Oversee the entry of all behavioral data into the database.
o Prepare and analyze behavioral data for Team Meetings and PPTs to accurately reflect students' current presentation and progress over time.
o Supervise and delegate responsibility to assistant teacher and other support staff assigned to the classroom as appropriate for specific program implementation with appropriate oversight.
o Regularly alert assistant principal to any issues or concerns with classroom support staff.
o May be required to serve as a TEAM mentor or cooperating teacher for a student teacher at the request of administration.
o Participate in and complete all requirements for the CT System for Educator Evaluation and Development (SEED) evaluation process.
o Maintain CT SDE Certification throughout employment.
o Maintain TCI certification throughout employment.
o Maintain CPR Certification throughout employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor's Level BA Degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university required.
Master's Level MA degree in Education from an accredited college or university.
DSAP Level All of the above job responsibilities will be conducted in close collaboration with a certified educational supervisor. BA degree from an accredited college or university with at least 12 credits in special education and current enrollment in SPED certification program.
All Levels - Minimum of one year of experience in a special education classroom preferred. Some experience with ED population required.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
BA and MA Level Valid CT 165 certification from CT SDE.
CPR certification required within 90 days of hire (provided by Solterra Academy).
Certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention required with the first training course provided after hire date.
Public Service License (PSL) may be required at request of administration.
