STEM Contractor, Rural Arizona Schools ' Society for Science Part-Time Independent Contractor

The Society for Science STEM Contractor will assess the unique needs, preferences and barriers to STEM engagement of rural Arizona teachers and students, and provide strategic support in augmenting existing STEM curricula with the Society for Science's science education programming opportunities, primarily the Science News in High Schools program. Funded for three years, this part-time independent contractor position will serve in the state of Arizona. The STEM Contractor will work independently with the Arizona Rural Schools Association (ARSA) and attend and present at key Arizona conferences to build relationships with STEM and literacy teacher leads and district coordinators in order to define the needs, goals and curricular resources gaps within each unique community. The Society's long-term goal is to collaborate and use Arizona Society for Science STEM Contractor results as a model to provide "district-level" support to rural schools nationwide.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with ARSA, among other rural AZ school organizations to build meaningful relationships with rural Arizona superintendents, district coordinators, teachers, students and other non-profits in an effort to understand the needs of rural Arizona classrooms and expand access and participation to the Science News in High Schools program and the Society's other STEM education programming
  • Advise with Science News in High Schools program staff to learn and become well-versed in Science News in High Schools program resources and other Society science education programming opportunities to support the rural Arizona school and district needs.
  • Advise and suggest appropriate Science News in High Schools resources to help teachers seamlessly integrate the program resources into classroom curricula to meet preexisting district STEM goals.
  • Organize and execute professional development sessions for rural Arizona coordinators and teachers.
  • Attend and present at key Arizona education conferences, including ARSA's Annual Conference, that reach rural school STEM or literacy teachers, administrators and district coordinator contacts.
  • Establish best practices and create a model for supporting rural schools nationwide.

  • Affinity for serving rural Arizona classrooms in STEM education
Education and Experience
  • Required:
    • Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 5 years work experience in STEM or literacy education in a rural school system
    • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Live in close proximity to Arizona and be able to travel, as needed, around the state to different rural districts
  • Desired:
    • A degree in education or a STEM field
    • Experience with creating STEM or literacy middle and high school curricula
    • Experience with running professional development for educators in rural settings
    • Experience with classroom teaching
    • Experience with Arizona's STEM and/or literacy curricula
Position Logistics

This is a 36-month independent contractor role that will be paid $15,000 annually for up to three years. It is understood that this position will invoice Society for Science, as appropriate. It is preferred that the contractor be located in or near the state of Arizona. Approved travel to rural districts across the state of Arizona will be required and reimbursed.
