This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's (SI) Smithsonian Facilities (SF). The incumbent reports to the Director, Smithsonian Gardens (SG).The incumbent serves as an associate entomologist, structural pest control, in the integrated pest management services program for all Smithsonian facilities in Washington, DC; Virginia, New York and Maryland which involves the implementation of a least-risk pest management for insects and commensal rodents.
Performs on-site pest evaluations to museums and galleries of the Smithsonian Institution monitoring for potentially damaging structural insects and rodents.
Selects and applies appropriate least-risk management practices in the control of pests.
Mixes pesticides, calibrates pesticide mix for proper dilution and applies pesticides in a safe manner.
Prepares technical information reports on structural pest control which includes summarizing, analyzing, and reporting pest management inspection data.
Assists in oversight of management and integration of pest control contractor's performance.
Schedules pest information meetings with museum staff. Works with Smithsonian staff to review environmental conditions and provides recommendations to eliminate pests.
Provides technical guidance through training and instruction to Smithsonian staff.

Work requires physical exertion and exposure to extreme conditions for extended or repetitive periods activities as walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending at the waist, work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items, of equipment that weigh less than 50 pounds.
Incumbent must attain appropriate state pesticide applicator certifications in EPA category 7 for General and Rodent pest control. Must pass an annual medical physical examination and respirator fit test to wear an air-purifying respirator while applying pesticides to Smithsonian property.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least theGS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.For this position specialized experience is defined asa registered structural pest control technician for health care, child care, zoo, museum or food services establishments performing services to prevent, control or eliminate pest infestations.
Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher levelgraduate education leading toa master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in entomology; or related discipline of the biological or physical sciencesmay be substituted to meet the specializedexperience requirements.Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. Degree in entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.
A combinationof education and experience courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
