Product Engineer

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, the Product Engineer will support all activities of the Engineering Department. This self-motivated individual will possess a mechanical engineering background and appreciate the need to balance technical competency with thoughtful commercial/business judgment to drive decision making. The individual will also undertake projects to develop and improve the processes for new products in addition to the performance and design of existing products. Such projects and/or initiatives should result in (i) increased operational efficiency (i.e., lower cost, less time, etc.), (ii) improved communication across functions, and (iii) reduced errors across the Company.

RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but are not limited to):

  • Support sales team and respond to customer inquiries, including:
    • Assist customers, inside sales personnel, and outside sales representatives with questions/inquiries regarding (i) product specifications for different applications and (ii) problems arising from product failures
    • Provide timely customer service and educate customer distributors and end-users on valve usage and product offering
    • Use knowledge of engineering and design principals, while following applicable industry standards to ensure products meet customer expectations
    • Create/generate CAD drawings used for product modifications or new product configurations
    • Help to conduct training sessions with customers, inside and outside sales personnel, and independent rep organizations to develop product knowledge and awareness
  • Assist with creating, controlling, and managing all BOMs, product designs, related drawings, tests/inspections, and verification of all current product lines, including:
    • Evaluate process for creating BOMs and verifying correctness of BOMs
    • Manage change control process to ensure that engineering modifications are correctly evaluated and defined prior to implementation
    • Review and approve modifications to product designs
  • Help to evaluate all returned goods authorization (“RGA”) requests (while adhering to Company’s standard procedures)
    • Determine whether or not faulty valve can be fixed/returned to end-user or needs replacement
    • Requires evaluating whether or not end-user installed and/or used valve correctly
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers and Company's employees in China to ensure that valves and valve parts meet manufacturing and engineering specifications
  • Assist Assembly department with resolving production, testing, and quality issues, including:
    • Research and assist with purchasing materials, tools, and equipment for assembling/testing to ensure Company's valves are assembled correctly and efficiently
    • Assist with assembly procedures, which may include helping to write assembly manual and ensuring that assembly workers follow it
    • Help to establish better practices/procedure and work rules for assembly operations, potentially developing daily production schedules and inspection protocols
  • Manage engineering-related projects for the Company
    • Provide project estimation, scheduling, and progress tracking
    • Identify/resolve project issues and mitigate risks, impediments, and dependencies while working with cross functional teams
    • Track and report project progress to stakeholders
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry, valve applications standards, valve performance certifications (i.e., API)
  • Help to maintain calibration of gauges and measuring devices related to testing/inspecting valves
  • Prepare, submit, and coordinate applications for various agency certifications and approvals, including
    supporting documentation and data

QUALIFICATIONS (professional experience, education, knowledge, and abilities):

  • B.S. in mechanical / manufacturing engineering is required, and master’s degree in engineering would be beneficial
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in the area of fluid control (e.g., valves. pumps, flow meters, etc) is required.
  • Existing capability using 3D CAD software
  • Existing capabilities to solve engineering problems, utilize critical thinking to evaluate new situations/problems, communicate effectively across the Company, and write reports in a timely manner
  • Track record of working efficiently, being self-directed, exercising strong discipline as an engineer
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong customer relationships
  • Excellent analytical skills and willingness to work towards achievement of business goals and initiatives
  • Capability to identify problems and conduct root-cause analyses to determine underlying causes
  • Desire for continuous improvement and willingness to pursue ongoing training to maintain knowledge of latest technology, certifications/industry standards, and product developments
  • Extensive experience working with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong oral, active listening, and written communication skills, which preferably include:
    • Building presentations to communicate ideas, analyses, and recommendations to organization
    • Effectively communicating across multiple internal and external layers of the Company
  • Proficiency in reading and writing English language is required, and additional fluency in Spanish language is strongly preferred


Work Environment/Travel

This job is based in the Commerce, CA or Elk Grove Village, IL branch location, and this position may require up to 5-10% travel.
