**This internship will begin in June 2024 and will be for a duration of 9 week.
**This position requires a minimum of 3 days in the office.

Job Summary:

The intern’s primary assigned project will be mechanical characterization of new materials to support ROME 2. This will involve: 1) Procurement of new mechanical characterization attachments for the Mark-10 mechanical tester; 2) Protocol development of 3-point bend, tensile, lap shear, pull of adhesion, and compressive stress testing; 3) Library of mechanical characterization of various materials. Additionally the intern will focus on bring online new laboratory instrumentation methods and analysis techniques, inventory management, reagent preparation, and glassware cleaning

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare material formulations for synthesis and characterization
  • Synthesize step growth and free radical soft matter materials
  • Update Principal Scientist with qualitative and quantitative observations regarding material quantity, quality, and performance
  • Analyze optical, fluorescent, mechanical, and other physical properties of various materials systems.
  • Prepare samples for materials characterization techniques such as SEM, DSC, DMA, Fluorescence, UV-Vis absorption
  • Chemical, supplies, and sample inventory management
  • Maintain an up-to-date laboratory notebook,
  • Data analysis and visualization

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Requirements:

  • Work environment—The wet chemistry lab is a CSL Level 1 facility. PPE is required at all times while in the laboratory. The remainder of the Senseonics facilities is an open office that will require headphones during meetings.
  • Physical demands—This position requires standing and walking >1 hour at times. To collect and analyze data, interfacing with a computer for up to 80% of the day will be required.
  • Position type and expected hours of work—The internship is 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. All work will be done at the Germantown headquarters.
  • Travel—No travel from headquarters is expected for this position.
  • Required education and experience—The candidate must have completed general chemistry and introduction to calculus course.
  • Preferred education and experience— The ideal candidate has taken one organic chemistry and one materials course. Research experience with polymers in a research setting is a plus.
