Position Summary: The Schatz Energy Research Center (www.schatzcenter.org) is seeking a research engineer or a senior research engineer to join our microgrid design team and contribute to our clean and renewable energy research and development activities. The successful applicant will join a dynamic team engaged in designing and deploying renewable energy based microgrids while contributing technical and/or analytical content to our research efforts in the fields of distributed energy resource integration, electric power generation and storage systems, clean transportation, and energy planning. The position is based in Arcata, California (USA). A one-year commitment is required. Reappointment is possible and desirable, contingent on funding and performance. The work provides an opportunity to make substantive contributions to the development of clean and renewable energy.
Background: The Schatz Center is an international leader in applied research and project implementation related to clean and renewable energy. Located at a modern facility at Humboldt State University (HSU) in California’s beautiful redwood coast region, our dynamic team consists of approximately 50 faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and students. The Center’s portfolio of clean energy projects includes renewable energy microgrids, renewable energy power systems, sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, energy planning and policy, and access to energy in off-grid areas of Africa and Asia. Project activities include research, development, demonstration and deployment, planning, and analysis. Through close association with the Environmental Resources Engineering undergraduate program and the Energy Technology and Policy graduate program at HSU, Schatz Center staff have a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse pool of students, many of whom utilize the Schatz Center as a valuable resource in their academic pursuits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct renewable energy work that may include: design work, experimental testing, data analysis, prototype fabrication and assembly, report and article writing, and documentation.
- Contribute to construction-ready design plans and specifications for renewable energy power systems
- Assist in the development of grant proposals in areas related to clean and renewable energy
- Supervise research staff and/or students
The activities of the selected applicant may vary depending on the person’s skills and experience.
Minimum Qualifications: Eligible applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an appropriate engineering or physical science field and at least five years of professional experience relevant to the work of the Center. The applicant should have technical and analytical expertise in at least one of the following areas: renewable energy microgrids, electric power systems, renewable energy system deployment, electrical engineering design work, controls engineering, and energy system integration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The successful applicant will demonstrate effective communication, documentation, research, technical design, problem-solving, organizational, and critical thinking skills; learn quickly; manage time effectively; work well both individually with limited supervision and in a team setting; and be highly motivated and self-directed. Applicants should also have excellent writing and editorial skills, experience with standard computer software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and appropriate skills in one or more areas of expertise related to the position.
Desirable Qualifications (note that applicants are not expected to have qualifications in all the listed areas):
- Specialization in electrical engineering and/or electric power systems
- Experience promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace
- Experience contributing to cohesive teamwork on complex projects with challenging deadlines
- Registration as a professional electrical engineer
- Experience programming Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems
- Experience configuring settings files for protection relays
- Experience with short circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies
- Strong familiarity with NFPA 70, the National Electric Code
- Technical and/or analytical skills in more than one of the fields specified above under minimum qualifications
- Project management experience
- Data and statistical analysis experience using R, Python, Matlab or similar programming languages
- Experience creating design plans in AutoCAD
- Master’s degree in an appropriate field of expertise
