Job Description

Job Purpose: 

Responsible for ensuring daily cellar operations are being performed according to Justin Smith’s direction and expectations.

Work Schedule: 

Monday – Friday. The position is generally 40 hours per week. It will require overtime (including weekends) during the harvest season, September to November.

Team Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Collaborate with the winemaking team in planning, scheduling, and completing all cellar activities
  • Cleaning, sanitizing, and sterilizing winery equipment and facilities
  • Racking and pumping of juice and wine
  • Moving hoses and equipment
  • Making SO2 additions to juice and wine
  • Safe operation of a forklift to move and stack barrels in the cellar
  • Filling, topping, and racking barrels
  • Operating processing equipment & presses
  • Updating, following, and observing all safe cellar practices 
  • Assist with blending and aging, decisions and operations
  • Assist with grape receiving, processing, ferments, and pressing
  • Assist with cellar record keeping in Vintrace
  • Encouraged to spend 1-2 hours per week continuing your education so that new ideas can be discussed in the cellar
  • Assist in supervising/training seasonal cellar employees 
  • Other duties as assigned by Justin Smith

Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. repeatedly
  • Must be able to unload barrels (100 lbs. each) from delivery trucks
  • Requires frequent standing, stooping, and bending
  • Work in warm and cold climates
  • Comfortable working in high places
  • Work on wet surfaces
  • Physical stamina to endure multiple long days during the harvest season
  • Available to work every Saturday and Sunday from September through November
  • Previous cellar experience required
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently
  • Must be computer literate with knowledge of basic word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Ability to perform basic calculations
  • Take appropriate initiative and be willing to ask questions before completing tasks
  • Ability to comfortably hang out with co-workers during down times
  • Must be trustworthy
  • Must be punctual and reliable
  • Exhibit respect, helpfulness, a positive attitude, and caution at all times
  • Ability to discreetly handle confidential information
  • Demonstrate cultural alignment and value alignment
  • Must be someone who pays close attention to detail when handling a luxury wine brand
  • Efficient forklift skills required. Training will be provided.
  • Working knowledge of industry standard winery equipment (pumps, processing equipment, presses)
  • Must carefully handle all winery equipment to prevent unnecessary breakage
  • Possess a solid knowledge of wine, grape growing, and winemaking processes with an enthusiasm to learn more
  • Passion for wine and farming
  • Experience with and enjoys supervising and training others
  • Must have soft skills, including interpersonal (people) skills, communication skills, listening skills, time management, and empathy, among others such as respect for team work and conflict resolution.
  • Must be fully vaccinated by the first day of employment. “Fully vaccinated” means the employer has documented that the person received, at least 14 days prior, either the second dose in a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series or a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccines must be FDA approved; have an emergency use authorization from the FDA; or, for fully vaccinated outside the United States, be listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Wage: $22.50 per hour
