Job Description

The Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for ensuring timely and effective development and implementation of all company’s policies, procedures, and activities involved in assuring the quality of manufactured products. He/she maintains close working relationships with other department managers and supervisory personnel to meet and maintain product quality, identify, solve, and prevent problems affecting product quality, maximize productivity, and comply with regulatory requirements. He/she reports to the Director of Food Safety/Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance Department

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Responsible for achieving Quality/Food Safety Key Performance Indictors (KPIs)
  2. Supervises and directs quality assurance associates/auditors who are responsible for third party audits and other quality-related policies to meet product quality standard.
  3. Ensures good performance by quality assurance associates and auditors by mentoring, training, setting expectations, providing accountability, and performing evaluations.
  4. Maintains a fair and professional work environment that focuses on the business objectives, but also balances quality of work-life factors for employees.
  5. Participates in all regulatory, third party and customer audits and inspections, and corrective action response.
  6. Assists in investigating and correcting quality-related issues (including customer complaints) through collaboration with other departments.
  7. Makes proactive recommendations and offering/presenting solutions to the Quality Systems & Regulatory Compliance Department Management to improve quality and work efficiency
  8. Introduces quality procedures to the plant and new personnel and is responsible for training and compliance.
  9. Participates in performance appraisals; provides feedback; and assists in setting goals and objectives.
  10. Responsible for developing Quality Systems process (Change Requests, approval of documents, document numbering systems, maintenance of history page…)
  11. Supervises Food Quality Associates and or Quality Technicians.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Lead and direct Food Quality Associate and or Quality Technician personnel. Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with site policies, applicable federal and local regulations. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training of employees. In addition, the QA Manager will be responsible for planning, assigning QA personnel work activities and projects, appraising performance, and resolving personnel work related issues.

Education and/or Experience:

  1. At least 5- 10 years of work experience as quality assurance associate and auditor in food/beverage and at least three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity developing general quality strategies.
  2. BS degree in Food science or related field (Meat Science, Biology, Microbiology, Food Microbiology or Chemistry).
  3. Excellent attention to details.
  4. Good interpersonal skills.
  5. Highly conscientious and diligent
  6. Good Knowledge of cGMP for Pet or human Food (21 CFR 507 or 113).
  7. Knowledge of data analysis using statistical process control (SPC) tools.
  8. Ability to perform both internal and external quality and food safety audits.
  9. Ability to work under pressure (in an extremely fast paced environment), meet deadlines (overtime may be required) and make effective decisions.
  10. Preferred: HACCP, PCQI, SQF certifications. Allergen Control training, Food Recall training, SQF, and Root Cause Analysis training a plus.

Computer and Technology Skills:

The successful candidate must be proficient in MS Office applications, Minitab, and a DMS program. SAP preferred but not required

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as standard operating procedures, work instructions and policy guides, and other procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Ability to understand German language is a plus.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and ability to apply concepts such as: fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
