Job Title: Perfusionist

Based at:  San Diego, CA  92161

Licenses and Certifications:

  • License: Full and unrestricted license issued in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Board Certification: All Perfusionist(s) shall be certified certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
  • ACLS, BLS

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years recent experience.
  • Demonstrate evidence of meeting continuing education requirements and shall have performed a minimum of 1000 clinical cases.
  • Experience shall be demonstrated in the following areas: Open heart surgery, autotransfusion, heart lung machine, membrane oxygenation, left/right heart bypass, intra-aortic balloon pumping and centrifugal ventricular assist devices

Education:

  • Perfusionist(s) shall be a graduate of an accredited Allied Health Education Program School of Perfusion Technology and shall be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion,

Duties:

Not limited to the following:

  • Set up and operate cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, conduct cardiopulmonary bypass, monitor and document all patient perfusion parameters, and make necessary adjustments for routine and emergent procedures requiring cardiopulmonary support.
  • Operate all associated perfusion equipment including cardioplegia, autotransfusion, cell saver, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), ventricular assist device (VAD) and femoral-femoral cardiopulmonary support (emergency bypass) as necessary.
  • Administer medications and blood components via bypass as necessary after consultation with the attending cardiac surgeon or anesthesiologists.
  • Assist in trouble-shooting IABP problems.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation of perfusion related services in the patients medical record.
  • Clean all perfusion equipment at the end of the procedure, conforming to all relevant hospital policies.
  • Maintain inventory levels and request supply replacements through established processes.
  • Promote patient safety before, during, and after the operation.
  • Maintain aseptic technique.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new products and procedures.
  • Infrequent Perfusion duties that may be required at the specific request of the attending cardiac or surgeon include: Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). These long-term life supports, usually 3-14 days in length, require skilled perfusion coverage 24 hours a day (four shifts of six hours each).
