Veterinary Technician Supervisor

The Veterinary Technician Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of the veterinary support staff; provides on-the-floor supervision and management ensuring the highest quality of care for each SF SPCA hospital patient.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Patient Care and Workflow Management
- Responsible for ensuring the nursing staff delivers high quality, compassionate patient care
- Organize and coordinate the Nursing Team to effectively complete daily tasks and manage workflow
- To handle all animals humanely, properly and with compassion and advocate for their safety and care
- Acts as a resource to staff to troubleshoot or problem-solve medical issues ensuring the highest quality of care for all patients
- Assists in monitoring and addressing hospital errors and implements strategies for prevention of future occurrences as part of established Quality Assurance Program
- Complies with all veterinary laws, adheres to all hospital protocols
Supervision
- Manage veterinary technical support staff utilizing a positive and collaborative team-oriented approach
- Participate in training and orientation of all technical staff
- Hold staff accountable for aspects of their job duties including disciplinary action when necessary,
- Maintain culture of direct communication and conflict resolution
- Ensures team members adheres to safety standards and nursing care protocols
- Assists in the maintenance and care of all hospital equipment ensuring that state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment is available to patients at all times
- Ensures the hospital operates within the guidelines as designated by all applicable regulatory bodies. (OSHA,DEA,USDA,AAHA,DOJ)
Leadership
- Provide staff development through teaching, mentoring and training
- Demonstrating and articulating the SF SPCA Core Values to all team members.
- Facilitates positive individual/team interactions and collaboration
- Provide leadership, supervision and coaching for the veterinary support staff; sustain a strong commitment to teamwork, high professional standards and continuing development
- Participate in management and department meetings
- Facilitates communication between departments
- Encourage return business and donations to the organization
Administrative
- Works to implement and develop policies, procedures and standards of care outlined in the Nursing Care Protocols Manual and the Employee Handbook
- Participates in staff recruitment, selection and on-boarding
- Provides staff performance reviews; develops and monitors performance improvement plans
- Maintains staff scheduling to ensure optimum staffing levels for all shifts
- Processes and approves time card entries
- Assist with AAHA re-accreditation
Customer Service
- Provides quality customer service to staff, volunteers, and clients while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events
- Collaborate with Client Service Department to problem solve client/patient related issues
- Promotes donation and giving opportunities as appropriate
Volunteers
- Works cooperatively with all volunteers and recognizes the talent and commitment they bring to the Society
Safety
- Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
- Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk

Open Communication
- Facilitate open, direct communication throughout the Society.

- Reports to the Nursing Care Director
- Supervises hospital veterinary support staff
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Work is performed in an animal hospital setting
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing stairs while seeing patients
- Regular sitting and data entry at a computer workstation
- Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel & treatment areas
- Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
- Repeated lifting and carrying of animals weighing up to 50 pounds
- Consistent exposure to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
- Registered Veterinary Technician in California or five years of related experience as a non-licensed Veterinary Technician
- Two years supervisory experience in animal hospital setting, preferred
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals and success of the San Francisco SPCA
- Experience with humane animal handling and minimal restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral patients
- Excellent written, verbal and computer skills including proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and databases
- Positive, motivational approach to team oriented environment
- High level veterinary nursing skills and knowledge
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize
- Experience in caring for and handling patients in a safe, effective and humane manner, including larger and possibly untrained pets
