Job Description

 

General Summary of Duties: Performs all duties necessary to facilitate the flow of patients through the clinic, including assisting the physician in procedures, correctly entering data into the patient’s chart, and rooming patients.

Supervisor: Site Supervisor

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Major Responsibilities/Tasks:

  1. Places patients in rooms, takes vitals and collects health history information according to established protocols.

  1. Updates health history information as needed.

  1. Completes podiatric x-ray images only when ordered by and under the supervision of the site physician.

  1. Promptly answers telephone calls in a courteous manner, screens calls, routes messages to appropriate personnel. Returns voice messages within the same business day.

  1. Assists patients in scheduling tests with other facilities or providers.

  1. Obtains any necessary authorizations for outside testing or procedures.

  1. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing the following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

  1. Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing requests for inventory on the orders log.

  1. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications.

  1. Scans records in the appropriate sections of the patient charts and keeps patient charts in the proper order.

  1. Transcribes letters and creates forms as needed.

  1. Copies patient information and forwards it to the requesting party after receiving appropriate consent to release the medical records.

  1. Maintain the confidentiality of patient and company files and records by adhering to privacy and security guidelines

  1. Maintains the organization and efficiency of the clinic area.

  1. Assists in covering the other office positions in the event of unscheduled absences.

  1. Performs other related duties as directed or assigned.

Education: High school graduation or GED

Experience: Minimum one year experience as a Medical Assistant

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge of the practice’s policies and procedures.

  1. Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance practices.

  1. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation for effective communication.

  1. Knowledge of computer programs and applications.

  1. Prompt and Regular Attendance

Skills:

  1. Skill in using office equipment and in handling paperwork and filing adequately.

  1. Skill in handling incoming phone calls and triaging appropriately.

  1. Skill in written and verbal communication.

  1. Skill in taking vitals and gathering patient health information.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to work effectively as a team member with physicians and other staff.

  1. Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems.

  1. Ability to interpret and understand insurance terminology related to authorizations.

  1. Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands.

  1. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.

  1. Ability to communicate clearly.

  1. Ability to work with little supervision.

  1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, cast saw, etc.

Work Environment: Position is in a well-lighted office environment. Occasional evening and weekend work. Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting.

Mental and Physical Requirements: Involves sitting approximately 50 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder. Occasionally lifting and carrying files or assisting patients in and out of chairs. May require working under stressful conditions.
