The ARD is dedicated to providing the highest quality of veterinary medical care, husbandry, enrichment and professional technical support to enable the scientists and their research.

Position Description:

Position supports the Salk Animal Facility (SAF) or the Cancer Research Animal Facility (CRAF) Supervisor and the daily operation of the animal care program. Position is an extension of the ARD management team and supports departmental guidelines and policies as established for the technician team. Position acts as a mentor through guidance and support to technical team in areas of daily operation including but not limited to: animal husbandry procedures, animal care equipment, physical plant issues, soiled and clean cage operations, behavioral test areas, special study support, inter/intra-facility animal transfers and team and departmental meetings. Position ensures that animals are in compliance with National Institutes of Health ( NIH), National Researcher Council (NRC) "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals," the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal Welfare Act (AWA), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) , and state/local animal care regulations.



  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent.
  • AALAS certification LAT


  • B.S. degree or equivalent experience in life sciences or extensive advanced post secondary courses in related biology, life sciences or laboratory animal science.
  • AALAS certification LATG.



  • Minimum of five years of extensive animal care experience in a lab animal facility with two years at the senior tech level which includes experience in handling multi species, general sanitation practices, and use of equipment such as automatic cage washer and autoclave.

Special Requirements:

  • Able to occasionally work a flexible schedule based on workload and deadlines.
  • Must be able to work assigned standard schedule 6:00AM-2:30PM, with flexibility for Mon-Fri, Sun-Thu, and/or Tue-Sat work.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed before or after regular shift or on weekends and holidays.
  • Post offer physical required which may include respirator fit test.
  • Rotating weekend and holiday duties required.


As a safeguard for employees and animals, all ARD employees may be subject to vaccines/tests/physical exams prior to working with specific animals or animal populations as required by research needs including but not limited to:

  • TB Testing/Clearance (every six months / twice a year)
  • Hepatitis B (proof of immunization and/or vaccination)
  • Rabies (proof of immunization and/or vaccination)
  • Tetanus (vaccination < 10 years)
  • Diphtheria (proof of immunization and/or vaccination)
  • Measles (proof of immunization and/or vaccination)
  • Periodic physical exams (may include respirator fit test)
  • Other vaccines/tests as required by Occupational Health & Safety standards

Physical Requirements:

This role requires constant seeing, hearing, communicating, working in a confined area, being exposed to noise, exposure to fumes, odors, dust, potential allergens, exposure to animals, and working inside.
