Job Description

PURPOSE
To ensure the District’s fleet of vehicles is in proper, safe operating condition to meet the mission set forth by the District.

DESCRIPTION
A full-time, non-exempt, hourly employee who reports directly to the Service Center Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Solve complex maintenance problems by interpreting layout drawings, specifications, schematics, diagrams, and operating characteristics of vehicle components.
2. Use of commercial manuals or automated systems to determine maintenance actions, procedures, and part research.
3. Perform preventative maintenance and repair of all District vehicles including but not limited to:
a. Mechanical – Perform routine maintenance on District vehicles. Identify and replace or repair items shown to be broken or in disrepair.
b. Electrical – Troubleshoot and repair electrical circuitry of the ambulance and other emergency vehicles in the fleet. Install electrical equipment on new vehicles.
c. Brakes – Installation and repair of brake pads, rotors, and drums. Troubleshoot and repair brake systems on District vehicles.
d. Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning – Troubleshoot and repair HVAC problems including thermostats, blower motors, temperature sensors, flow solenoid, and circuit boards.
4. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment used in the daily operation of the vehicle maintenance service.
5. Prepares new and refurbished vehicles for use according to District specifications (i.e., mounting of equipment, pre-service inspections, and checklists).
6. Maintains the District’s fleet of spare backup vehicles to allow for an optimal state of readiness in the event of mechanical breakdowns, repairs, or general maintenance needs.
7. Ensures shop equipment is inspected and serviced at the required intervals and any unsafe or unserviceable tools and equipment are removed from use.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Service Center Manager.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Loads and unloads District supplies and goods delivered to the Service Facility.
2. Performs periodic maintenance and repair of various pieces of patient care equipment.
3. Ensures maintenance and supply documentation is complete and accurate following all Federal, State, and District regulations, policies, and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:
a. High School diploma or equivalent
b. Five (5) years of job-related prior experience and/or education in an accredited Technical School.
c. Five (5) years of experience in Emergency Vehicle maintenance and repair (preferred)
2. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
a. Valid Driver’s License
b. ASE Engine Repair Certification
c. ASE Brake Repair Certification
d. ASE Truck Certification
e. EPA Section 608 Certification
f. EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) Certification (preferred) (mandatory within 2 years)


3. Skills:
a. Mathematical Skills – The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
b. Language and Interpersonal Communication Skills – Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to established criteria and standards. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to clearly write routine reports and correspondences. Ability to speak effectively with vendors and employees of the District. Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as work orders, bid sheets, purchase orders, and schematics.
c. Reasoning Ability – Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
d. Computer Skills – Ability to operate windows-based applications, internet-based browsing for research and part requisitions, and tablet-based applications for diagnostic and reporting functions.
e. Other Skills – Ability to operate and drive ambulances, standard and medium duty trucks, fleet vehicles, and other emergency vehicles. Ability to operate mechanical, hand, air, and power tools. Ability to operate mechanical, hydraulic and air assist floor jacks and lifts. Ability to operate electronic diagnostic equipment.

1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, lay, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, talk, hear, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet, dry, cold, heat and other outdoor weather conditions. The employee is also occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations. Noise levels are moderate in the work environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and to talk or hear and to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently required to use hands to type, handle, or feel. Occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
