Department: Music Reports To: Pastor Status: Full-Time Description Summary The Director of Music Ministry is a visionary, spiritual leader responsible for the effective planning, coordination and execution of music within the liturgical and community life of the parish and its three distinctive churches. This person is gifted with a vision of how the parish can develop its musical potential with diverse styles of worship and Church music (i.e., traditional, hymns and contemporary repertoires), particularly of African and African American cultures and music styles. Duties and Responsibilities  Plan and direct a comprehensive parish music program which includes selecting and planning the music in cooperation with the parish Worship/Liturgy Committee.  Provide musical leadership for all Sunday liturgies, funerals, Holy Days, sacramental and other major celebrations.  Supervise the choir(s), musicians and cantors  Coordinate and schedule all musicians (choir, cantor, instrumentalists) and rehearsals.  Know the latest Church and liturgical documents and music trends.  Maintain regular communication and collaborate closely with the pastor and with other members of the parish staff while integrating his or her own areas of responsibility with the overall vision of the parish.  Attend parish Worship/Liturgy Committee meetings.  Provide an attitude of generous service and mutual support as the parish music resource consultant; will be responsible to help educate staff and parishioners about their role in music and worship.  Work with the pastor and Parish Finance Council to develop a yearly budget for the music ministry.  Work to foster unity among all parish musicians and create a spirit of harmony with the pastor and other liturgical minsters.  Promote good public relations both within and beyond the parish, and be involved in ecumenical and diocesan networks.  Support the pastor to create vibrant, prayerful worship experiences.  Collaborate with the pastor and his advisory boards, under his supervision, and with other members of the parish staff in the overall parish endeavor.  Participate in professional development workshops, trainings and formation opportunities and encourage other music ministers to engage in these events.  Have a flexible work schedule (will include evenings and weekends). 2 Preferred Professional Requirements and Experience  Strong person of faith; has knowledge and appreciation of Roman Catholic Liturgy; preferably a Catholic.  Strong knowledge of instrumental and/or vocal skills.  Experience directing music and vocals, teaching and working with a variety of age groups, playing piano/keyboard, and ability to play the organ and arrange music.  Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.  Able to work independently as well as collaboratively with others.  Knowledge of and ability to engage in diverse styles of Church music (i.e., traditional, hymns and contemporary repertoires) for choirs, vocalists, instrumentalists and congregation.  Knowledge of African and African American cultures and music styles.  Pass all safe environment clearances. Skills and Competencies  Bachelor’s Degree in Music (Masters of Music preferred).  Three (3) – Five (5) years’ experience  Demonstrates organizational, administrative and collaborative management skills.
