General Summary:

The Sr. Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for collaborating with the President/CEO and leadership team to cast the vision and strategy for the brand/organization and present it to both internal and external stakeholders - this includes staff, prospective clients, active clients, corporate partners, funding sources and government & civic entities. The goal is to strategically position Safer, through a full suite of marketing activities, as a mission-driven organization promoting successful reentry through employment, and a full spectrum of services, that work to reduce recidivism and promote healthy families and communities. The position reports to the Sr. Vice President of Strategy and Innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Stakeholder Interface -

Marketing and Communications
  • Comprehensive marketing/communications plan is developed and implemented yearly to build Safer Foundation's organizational brand.
  • Work with leadership team to build an organizational brand and deliver communications that will position Safer as a strategic priority for key stakeholders including - clients/prospects, employer partners, funding sources and government/civic entities.
  • Establish and manage implementation of a comprehensive annual communications/marketing plan and calendar for client recruitment, internal communications, community relations, government relations, special events and support of the organization's social enterprises.
  • Responsible for overseeing the creation, editing and proofreading of communications for the organization that includes annual reports, newsletters, recruitment collateral, and fundraising materials that tell the Safer story in a compelling manner.
  • Establish, manage and maintain website, social media efforts, to support the organization's digital presence.
  • Develop and utilize graphic design for internal and external use such as newsletters, powerpoints, updates, and reports.
  • Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, programs, and services.
  • Gather content and create audio and video materials highlighting Safer Foundations mission and impact.


Public Relations
  • Comprehensive media relations strategy that positions Safer as one of the nation's leading community-based organizations in criminal justice reform, reentry services, workforce development, and community corrections is developed and managed yearly.
  • Develop and manage a media relations strategy that positions Safer as one of the nation's leading community-based organizations in criminal justice reform, reentry services, workforce development, and community corrections.
  • Led in selection and management of professional PR support firm
  • Mine and manage media interviews with Safer President/CEO and other designated spokesperson and subject matter experts coordinating local public/government relations opportunities for Safer's initiatives/policy.


Stakeholder Outreach and Recruitment -

Client Recruitment & Engagement
  • Create and manage a client centric go-to-market recruitment strategy and first contact engagement experience.
  • Analyze the organization current offerings and translate it into compelling recruitment messages that clearly expresses "what's in it for them" (or compelling RTBs - reason to buy) benefits-based problem solution advertising.
  • Oversee development of marketing messages including cold calling scripts, email marketing, referrals, social media and traditional communications efforts
  • Develop and utilize graphic design for internal and external use such as newsletters, powerpoints, updates, and reports.
  • Establish and maintain lead capture and tracking practices
  • A comprehensive client recruitment strategy is planned and executed that helps the organization establish and maintain its fair share of clients.

Events and Fundraising
  • Responsible for the planning, oversight and coordination of Safer Foundation fundraising and special events.
  • Solicitation of sponsorship for monetary and in-kind support.
  • Directing of event timelines and associated staff and volunteer activities to ensure all elements of the event are delivered on time and in quality fashion.
  • Production and oversight of all event materials (letters, invitations, posters, flyers, etc.).
  • Ensure the organization and execution of complete event mailers.
  • Manage all event venue(s) and vendor relationships.
  • Manage volunteer event planning committees.
  • Orchestrate and execute event marketing and outreach.


New Program & Social Enterprise Launch
  • Develop and executing go-to-market plans for all new products and services
  • Manage all elements of the product launch process including value proposition articulation, development and execution of go-to-market plans and internal organizational readiness
  • Work with operational stakeholders to drive detail plans as appropriate.
  • Develop best practices to facilitate high quality product releases
  • Apply the global product launch process to all product launches including inputs, timelines and key deliverables from cross-functional partners, managing multiple launches at the same time
  • Understand the scope and operational requirements and impacts of all cross functional teams for each launch
  • Work with the team to develop sales and partner training and any additional materials and information necessary to aid the Sales teams in effectively selling new products to prospective and existing customers
  • Maintain a calendar of future launches, communicating and educating launch process out to the operational stakeholders.
  • Coordinate regular launch team meetings, publishing notes and action items to team members.
  • Assist in the attainment of product revenue growth and attachment during the initial post-launch period through the development and implementation of new product marketing programs and enhancements to value proposition messaging


Tracking, Document and Reporting
  • Assist with logistics, preparation and tracking of events, meetings and conferences.
  • Gather content and create audio and video materials highlighting Safer's work.
  • Statistical information is current, correct, and consistent in all external materials.
  • Templates and guides are up-to-date and readily available for dissemination to appropriate audiences.


Fiscal Reporting and Accountability
  • Ensure all Marketing and Communications remain within the budget.
  • Track revenue, expenses and budgeted forecast for all events (including hours spent on each event).
  • Submit yearly event report.


Supervision and Supervision of People
  • Establish and manage implementation of a comprehensive annual communications/marketing plan and calendar for public relations, internal and external media services, community relations, government relations, and special events.
  • Manage a team of individuals to support the Marketing and Communications strategies and events.
  • Direct and Manage relationships with outside professional services firms as necessary to carryout Safer's marketing and communications plans.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills - including collaboration, communications and consensus building especially as it relates to strategic marketing initiatives
  • High degree of integrity, ability to navigate a variety of professional landscapes
  • Deeply passionate about marketing and have demonstrated success of creating marketing strategies that resulted in high growth
  • Successful track record in shaping and launching new products
  • Ability to formulate ideas into compelling words and messaging.
  • Advanced level of proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Advanced level of proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
  • Ability to travel.
  • Possess demonstrated skills in technical and creative writing
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage negative press and handle public situations well.
  • Proven ability to thrive and multi-task in a high energy environment, and work well under pressure and against deadlines imposed by both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be creative and able to develop materials and to articulate information clearly and concisely.
  • Must be a self-starter and have capacity to work independently.
  • Experience with reporting, spreadsheets, and database systems required.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and detail-orientation.
  • Outgoing, able to work effectively with others, and to proactively troubleshoot and take initiative on assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate programs and to coordinate events.


Education and Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in marketing and communications
  • BA in communications, marketing, non-profit management, English, or equivalent required. Graduate level degree preferred.
  • Prior event management and communications plan experience required; ideal candidate will have a minimum of three to five years relevant experience.
