Head of Tax

Our Client is seeking a Head of Tax, based in the New York office, to lead and manage the tax department operations including all aspects of tax compliance, global tax planning, accounting for income taxes and partnership tax. The Head of Tax will manage five employees and have responsibility across the company’s worldwide offices, ensuring a consistent service level in each location. The Head of Tax will establish a well-controlled, efficient and customer focused full-service tax function.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the operations of the global tax department
  • Coordinate with the Director of Accounting and Tax on the recommendation of implementation of tax planning strategies while liaising with outside tax advisors
  • Monitor U.S. and international tax developments (ex. legislation, regulations, and changes in business operations) and communicate the necessary recommendations to management as to whether to take advantage of the changes or limit exposure
  • Liaise with the Partner Services/Partner Accounting teams on tax issues related to various partner transactions, such as the return of capital, draws, other distributions, annual allocations and charges
  • Mange the production process for Partners’ K-1’s with support from the Benefits and Partner Accounting teams, and ensure necessary reconciliations between cash income and taxable income are performed
  • Review various federal, state and international business filings, local tax registrations, and sales/value added tax returns prepared by the accounting team or outside tax advisers
  • Ensure international, federal, state and local election, filing and payment deadlines are met; file extensions when necessary, and maintain a detailed calendar of all deadlines
  • Assess the efficiency and effectiveness of current and proposed tax department processes in reporting tax information across the Firm
  • Serve as the key point of contact during regulatory audits of international, federal, state and local tax filings when required, including year-end audit processes
  • Coordinate with Purchasing, Payroll and Human Resource departments on independent contractor determinations to ensure compliance with IRS rules on the proper classification of workers
  • Lead the preparation of comprehensive tax working papers, research memos and/or correspondence and maintain records related to tax returns and reports
  • Liaise with Partners’ personal tax advisers; provide explanations and documentation when needed
  • Review quarterly, with support from the Payroll team, market-based sourcing requirements for each state against the company’s time and travel reports
  • Develop regular, ad-hoc, and real-time/exception-based reporting in order to extract and interpret relevant information related to tax
  • Develop and maintain all necessary documentation for transfer pricing and support filings under the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting rules
  • Act as a liaison with the Firm’s Tax Matters Partner and external domestic and international tax advisers
  • Generate annual budget and monthly forecasts for tax-related accounts including business taxes, interest and penalties and withholding taxes
  • Collaborate across the Finance department to increase efficiency in financial processes that cross departmental lines
  • Assist the Director of Accounting and Tax with periodic special projects including the preparation of presentations and analyses for the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Committee, the evaluation of strategic financing and capital decisions, and the implementation of new processes
  • Work with the Firm’s Controller to ensure that the appropriate internal controls are in place over the accounting for various taxes and tax related balances
  • Respond to internal and external auditors’ comments concerning tax operations and oversee required action to address deficiencies
  • Develop, regularly update and monitor personnel’s adherence to the Tax Section of the Company’s Global Finance Policy and Procedure Manual

Qualifications

  • CPA Certification required. Enrolled Agent certification a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting required
  • 12+ years of related experience with at least five years in a public accounting firm
  • Demonstrable experience of partnership tax compliance and accounting
  • Significant US states tax experience required
  • Experience with international tax laws highly regarded, particularly UK, France, Hong Kong, China and Brazil
  • Knowledge of and experience working with various accounting and tax systems
  • Understanding, and delivery, of an effective control environment across multiple locations
  • Ability to adjust to new, different, or changing requirements while conveying a sense of urgency
  • Must be a hands-on manager, capable of operating in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be self-motivated and detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute strategically by identifying and implementing business process improvements
  • Strong planning, project management and organizational skills with an attention to detail
