Job Description

THE POSITION

The incumbent will provide leadership to the Clinical Laboratory of the hospital. The Laboratory Services are comprised of Microbiology, Hematology, Chemistry, Histology, Viral Testing, and Blood Bank totaling a team over 50 staff. As the Director, the incumbent will provide direct coaching and mentorship to the team and grow the medical and pathology laboratories through collaboration and partnership

The successful candidate will bring strong laboratory leadership to the hospital, vast experience in the various specialties of Clinical Laboratory Science, and a unique vision to expansion and growth projects.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Direct, plan, assign, and evaluate the work of all technical and non-technical laboratory personnel within the MC, CHC and CHS, ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

Direct strategic plan development and implementation, including assessment of new technology, staffing, space, and capital needs.

Determine the need, suitability and cost of instruments, equipment, clinical testing, and supplies.

Direct the preparation and maintenance of records, reports and correspondence; prepare departmental budget including personnel, operational and capital equipment costs.

Manage the Clinical Laboratorys student training program; manage existing affiliation agreements and build academic partnerships to attain new relationships and agreements with educational organizations.

Manage all professional partnerships; review and approve requests to conduct research at the the hospital's Clinical Laboratory; develop and improve standardized research procedures; serve as an active member on the departments International Review Board (IRB) and provide professional support to external researchers utilizing the hospital's lab.

Assist staff in meeting workload demands; evaluate staffing levels to ensure maximum productivity as workload fluctuates.

Direct subordinates on any necessary minor adjustments and repairs on instruments and equipment.

Collaborate with other departments, community hospitals, medical staff, and Pathologists as appropriate, in patient care and performance improvement activities; communicate appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administration.

Attend and participate in hospital committees and meetings as appropriate.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five years of supervisory experience in directing and managing the activities of a hospital laboratory.

Knowledge of: Chemistry, bacteriology, serology, hematology, and parasitology; principles, techniques, equipment, and terminology used in the laboratory diagnosis of disease and abnormal condition; common causes of disease and the methods of transmission and control of communicable diseases; principles of effective supervision.

Ability to: Perform the more difficult laboratory tests and analyses; supervise and train laboratory personnel; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; prepare reports; maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and others.

License: Possession of a valid license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.
