About the Firm:

Relman Colfax PLLC is a national civil rights law firm, with a litigation practice focused on combating discrimination and advancing equality in the areas of housing, lending, employment, public accommodations, education, and criminal justice. Our practice includes individual and class action lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs who have experienced discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, national origin, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, age, familial status, and other characteristics.

The firm also provides legal counsel to financial institutions, tech companies, housing providers, local governments, and nonprofits striving to be industry leaders in civil rights compliance. We conduct internal investigations and provide guidance regarding lending, housing, employment, consumer protection, algorithmic bias, privacy, whistleblower, and federal regulatory matters. Our practice also includes analysis and strategy regarding public policy issues and proposed legislation affecting civil rights.

Job Summary:

At Relman Colfax, paralegals provide and assist attorneys with a wide range of legal and administrative support tasks. They participate in all phases of the legal process and are an essential part of how we serve our litigation and counseling clients. Ideal candidates have prior paralegal or legal assistant experience, knowledge of the litigation process, are detail-oriented team players, enjoy working collaboratively, and have an interest in social justice/civil rights. This is a full-time position that requires occasional overtime and flexibility to meet strict case deadlines.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys in the preparation, finalization, and filing of legal briefs, client presentation, and trial;
  • Research federal and local rules to ensure proper and timely filings;
  • Advise and implement regarding firm-wide systems and processes, including coordination with vendors and litigation-related templates and software;
  • Assist in conducting factual investigations, research, and discovery;
  • Perform administrative tasks (note-taking, calendaring, scanning, mailings, etc.);
  • Communicate with clients, potential clients, witnesses, and relevant parties;
  • Attend strategy sessions, client meetings, depositions, hearings, and trials on an as-needed basis; and
  • Perform other support tasks as assigned

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of paralegal experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong proofing, formatting, and grammar skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products
  • Document management software experience is a plus
  • Litigation experience is a plus
  • Federal court discovery and litigation experience is a plus
  • E-filing experience is a plus
  • Arc GIS/Mapping experience is a plus
  • Spanish fluency is a plus.
