The Simulation and Training Solutions group at Collins Aerospace is seeking a part-time Sr. Mechanical Engineering professional join our Sterling, VA team. This role will be focused on the development, build and modification of aircraft and ground vehicle simulators for both military and commercial customers. Devices range in complexity from PC based desktop trainers to high fidelity full-flight training systems. This is a remote part-time role.

What you will do:
  • Design and document fabricated parts and mechanical assemblies including sheet metal, weldments, machined parts, mechanical chassis, and rack-mounted structures.
  • Design electro-mechanical interconnect assemblies, to include base understanding of electrical component and cable assembly requirements in the assembly.
  • Create engineering specifications and interface with the third-party vendors to whom they are contracted.
  • Design, Analyze, Integrate and Document hardware systems of moderate to high complexity.
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, software and systems engineering) to ensure the mechanical design is appropriate for the project/product design approach.
  • Design to cost and budget constraints and provide estimates to complete for their own work.
  • Generally, operate with minimal assistance, as well as mentor and assist junior engineers.
  • Travel as necessary to customer and company sites


Education & Experience:
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.


Skills you must have:
  • Must have significant experience with E2 Simulation / Training device platforms.
  • Experience designing and creating mechanical drawings with SolidWorks (3D) & AutoCAD (2D)

  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office tool suite

The salary range for this role is 75,000 USD - 161,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.
