The Certified Pharmacy Technician performs tasks related to the filling of medication orders, maintains both manual and computer based records. Prepares intravenous solutions using proper aseptic techniques, supplies controlled substances. Maintains accurate records of disposition, maintains inventories in the pharmacy storeroom and work areas. Supplies medications and stock to patient care areas and appropriately charges for items supplied.
1. Reads and transcribes orders; gathers material and prepares to send medications for patients. Transports medications and supplies between the Pharmacy, patient care areas of the hospital, and other areas of the campus. Inventories and restocks pharmacy work areas and patient care service areas. Assists in maintaining appropriate inventory levels as designated by the Inventory Control Coordinator.
2. Utilizes computer terminal for order entry, patient profiles, label printing, and billing functions. Performs directed operating procedures (e.g., prepares billing batches and global day end functions, etc.). Fills floor stock and patient charge items from all currently used forms, processing the appropriate billing. Utilizes the hospital pneumatic tube system and fax system to transmit and receive orders.
3. Prepares intravenous solutions, antibiotics, hyperal solutions, chemotherapy, and investigational drugs using aseptic technique. Marks labels with correct information. Sets up work area in orderly fashion for pharmacist to check. Cleans the laminar flow bench according to established departmental procedures. Delivers I.V. solutions to nursing units. Checks the refrigerators on the units to insure that rotations of I.V. are being performed. Returns outdated I.V.s to the pharmacy. Prepares credits for I.V.s returned, recycles items as designated by the pharmacists.
4. Supplies controlled substances and maintains accurate records of disposition; conducts audits as requested, referring discrepancies to a supervisor. Prepares issues, receives, and inventories predetermined controlled substances packages to be used by Anesthesia personnel.
Working hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

-Ability to communicate verbally, in person and over the telephone, and in writing with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare personnel
-Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate department computer application packages
-Ability to operate a computer terminal, calculator, and other office equipment; manipulate fine instruments; and prepare pharmaceutical entities in minute proportions
-Knowledge of pharmacy law
-Ability to read and transcribe required information from medication orders
-Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and department records
-Ability to work well within a team environment: by accepting and offering honest and constructive feedback; by supporting team goals and encouraging other team members; and by collaborating with patient care team members to consolidate work, solve problems, create new methods and/or reduce costs
-Shows flexibility/adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and demands placed on services as is common with changing reimbursement and managed care targets
-Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the customer service policy
Experience and Training Required:
-Six months (6) Pharmacy Technician experience OR completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training program
-National Pharmacy Technician Certification
-Licensed as a pharmacy technician by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy
-License can be applied for at time of offer acceptance but employee may not start working independently until issuance of license.
