Job Description

The Behavioral Health Therapist – Community Based is a professional position providing clinical assessment and therapy services to children and families in the community. The position is responsible for providing community based therapy, and case management support services to children that meet the SED criteria and their families. The therapist provides individual, family, and group therapy, including coordination of services with families, schools, DHHS / foster care, and other community agencies. The person in this role may perform comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, psychological testing, and evaluations based on the individual and child and family needs. This position functions with a great deal of professional independence under the general guidance and supervision of the Behavioral Health Director.  This position will also require outreach activities to engage stakeholders and generate program referrals.  This position may also serve youth involved in the JJ system.

  1. Conduct face-to-face comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments.
  2. Formulate and coordinate person-centered treatment plans.
  3. Provide individual, family, and group therapy in the community utilizing evidence-based practices.
  4. Collaborate and participate with treatment team, community partners, and other natural supports identified by the family.
  5. Participate in case conferences and staff meetings.
  6. Initiate referrals for psychiatric evaluations when deemed clinically appropriate. 
  7. Assist families with accessing and utilizing community resources.
  8. Act as a liaison between child/family and their natural support system, primary care physicians, and other community agencies and supports identified by the family.
  9. Prepare reports for other agencies, DHHS, courts, schools, etc.
  10. Obtain and maintain CAFAS rater-reliability and conduct quarterly CAFAS assessments
  11. Maintain timely and accurate client records to ensure they meet DWIHN, CARF, and agency standards.
  12. Maintain a caseload of 10-15 clients.
  13. Participate in in-service planning and programing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no direct reports, and no indirect reports. The positions that report to this person are:

This job operates in a variety of environments including individual's homes, professional and community environments, and clinical office settings with some exposure to communicable disease, community and partner agencies, and youth spaces. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phone, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment and job sites may be loud. 

This is a full time, permanent position.  The position has a flexible schedule based on the duties and requirements of the position. Scheduling is based on client availability and needs, and there is an opportunity for a four day work week. 

This position requires local travel to complete errands and duties as assigned. In-state and national travel may be required up to 5% of the time. The employee must have a valid driver license approved for airline travel. 


  1. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Social Work, and have a LMSW from the State of Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services.
  2. Two (2) years’ experience with general mental health diagnosis and treatment, with at least one (1) of those years in community based services.
  3. Experience working with individuals and families involved with Department of Health and Human Services, Foster Care, Juvenile Justice, and experience with homelessness. 
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and positive LGBTQ development. 
  5. Experience with Microsoft Office, and Google Suite Software. 


  1. Ten (10) years’ experience with general mental health diagnosis and treatment. 
  2. Experience using the following evidence based practices, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, CAFAS, LOCUS, and ASAM criteria. 
  3. LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) cultural and diversity competency.
  4. Familiarity with the Ruth Ellis Center’s principals of work (trauma informed care, harm reduction, restorative justice, and positive youth development).


  1. CAFAS Certified 
  2. Wellplace, or equivalent certification body, Qualified Mental Health Professional and Child Mental Health Professional certification.
  3. Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), or Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) certification or development plan within the first thirty (30) days.


  1. Must be able to pass a criminal background check as outlined by agency policy.
  2. Have no record on the Central Registry for child abuse or neglect in the employee’s state of residency or employment. 
  3. Be able to produce a non-reactive tuberculosis test from within the previous twelve (12) months.
