Job Description

RMA is seeking an actuarial professional to join our team in a non-traditional role.

Under the direction of a Senior Actuary, this individual will maintain, enhance, and build actuarial models, perform experience studies, and use them to prepare actuarial reports for the assessment of underwriting standards for residential mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration.


  • Serve as the principal developer for predictive analytical models that incorporate stochastic simulation and deterministic methods to estimate the net worth of the residential mortgage portfolio that is guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).
  • Perform experience studies for mortgagor behavior (e.g., defaults, prepayments, property sales, loan draws) and claim recovery rates under various economic conditions (e.g., interest rates, home price appreciation). These studies incorporate both frequency and severity where applicable.
  • Prepare reports showing and interpreting the results of the experience studies and how they relate back to the assumptions used in the models.
  • Analyze and prepare source data provided by client. These analyses include data reasonableness checks quarterly roll forwards of loan dispositions.
  • Forecast the performance of loans in the FHA portfolio based on stochastic projections of mortgage insurance premiums and economic conditions.
  • Prepare written evaluations of the risk characteristics of the FHA portfolio including how the risk profile has changed in recent years.
  • Perform model risk assessments including an evaluation of governance and controls, model testing, and model output validation.
  • Prepare reports discussing the methodological vulnerabilities in the models including the risk of material differences between forecasted and actual experience.
  • Develop documentation for all models, including data sources, processing and reconciliation, model variables, methodology, and model validation.
  • Assist the firm’s growth through development of proposals for actuarial services for other governmental contracts.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements for the American Academy of Actuaries to sign Statements of Actuarial Opinion.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, or a related field.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society
  • Member of the American Academy of Actuaries

Skills and Experience

  • 5 – 10 years of experience with modeling techniques like multinomial logistic regression, binomial logistic models, and multinomial discrete choice models.
  • Demonstrated ability to tell the “story” behind the data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel including the use of pivot tables and functions like vlookup, hlookup, sumifs, countifs, index, and match.
  • Experience with SAS and SQL, or similar programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes.
  • Experience in responding to inquiries from auditors.
  • Excellent communication skills.
