Quartz seeks an entrepreneurial editor to shape the next era of its Quartz Africa edition by leading a team of staff and freelance journalists in covering the most important business, technology, and economic trends on the continent. We are looking for someone with a wealth of experience covering developments in Africa—from China’s debt diplomacy to the rise of fintech to the next wave of Africa’s startup innovators—who can bring a creative approach to their work, has a facility with data, and will help Quartz see around corners to where the region is headed. We'd look to you to find fresh ways to translate news developments into interesting, timely stories; to identify ideas, companies, and people deserving of more attention; and to develop Quartz Africa’s first subscription product.
The ideal candidate is familiar with Quartz obsessions like Beyond Silicon Valley, Rethinking Cities, The Climate Economy, Borders, and Future of Finance, and will see how stories about Africa can be told through those lenses. We are looking for someone who is curious and versatile, excellent at surfacing ideas, and fascinated by using company and industry trends as tools to explain the global economy (and vice versa). This role is best suited to a journalist with at least 5 to 7 years of editing experience, as well as experience managing a team.
