Job Description

 

SUMMARY

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner oversees the process of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with psychiatric disorders or potential for such disorders using his/her full scope of therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy. He/she will work efficiently to attain and maintain the highest level of care in accordance with regulatory standards. He/she also performs History & Physical Exams and Psychiatric Evaluations as delegated by the Medical Director as well as performs a vital function in aiding clients on their road to recovery.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Availability to answer telephone calls from Facility employees 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, making reasonable efforts to respond to all such calls within thirty (30) minutes of the initial call.

· Authorizing patient admission and directing patient care, including the use of prescription medications, whether through written or standing orders.

· Within the first twenty four (24) hours following a patient’s admission to the Facility, performing a thorough psychiatric evaluation in compliance with all relevant standards of the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

· Within the first twenty four (24) hours following a patient’s admission to the Facility, performing a thorough medical history and physical examination in compliance with all relevant standards of JCAHO.

· Assessing face to face all patients at a Detoxification level of care, as defined by the Facility’s Utilization Review department, 365 days Per Year.

· Assessing face to face all patients at all levels of care other than Detoxification, as defined by the Facility’s Utilization Review department, no less than once per week of their stay at the Facility.

· Attending all Treatment Team meetings and/or other appointments requested by the Facility to discuss the coordination of patient care across departments and to review patient progress toward stated goals and objectives of treatment.

· Directing aftercare and discharge planning, including authorizing patient discharge.

· Will maintain appropriate state licensure.

· Will have no pending or past sanctions, debarments, suspensions, or exclusions by any federally funded healthcare program, including Medicare and Medicaid.

· Shall act in accordance with the policies, procedures, and standards of the Facility including all relevant regulations of JCAHO and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must hold active Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Indiana
  • Must hold at least an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution of higher learning. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in nursing in a mental health setting
  • Prior experience in the chemical dependency field preferred
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a managerial role

· Personal passion or interest in substance abuse issues strongly preferred

· Must be committed to drug-free lifestyle and responsible alcohol use

 

Communication Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

 

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

Computer Skills:

Competency with Microsoft Office Suite. Comfortable working with electronic health records.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
