Transportation Manager

Primary Objective:

Responsible for the overall success of customer relationships, employee development, customer service, and efficient daily operations of the trucking department. Provides oversight for all operating activities, including pick-up and delivery, port interaction, governmental regulations, customer service, reporting, and continuous improvement. Directs the development of the trucking supervisory personnel and drivers to support the client relationship and client requirements. Carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Principle Duties and End Results

  • Oversee driver routes and activity to maximize utilization and ensure productivity.
  • Drive daily manpower planning with trucking supervisors.
  • Identify and develop specific action to improve trucking gross margin.
  • Full P&L responsibility
  • Drive Revenue
  • Gross Margin – ensure we have correct pricing with our customers and drivers
  • Manage the fixed people and chassis fleet.
  • Drive to 0 on demurrage/detention
  • Ensure customer rates drive profitability; identify and act on ‘out of scope’ customers.
  • Grow business
  • Develop new business
  • Collaborate with other carriers in the market
  • Monitor the plan for equipment leasing and maintenance, as needed.
  • Promote a safety program with all trucking and dispatch personnel and ensure a safe work environment with all associates and direct reports.
  • Ensure we are compliant w/ all DOT requirements
  • Drive to 0 accident and injuries
  • Ensure KPIs for each customer are established and appropriate. Develop and implement action plans to improve KPIs.
  • Improve Service and Efficiency
  • Develop our TMS (TruckMate) to drive efficiencies
  • Look to provide proactive communication, reporting to internal /external customers.
  • Ensure supervisors and managers drive performance improvement and understand customer requirements.
  • Eliminate PLG caused charge-backs.
  • Effectively communicate with customer.
  • Understand contractual requirements.
  • Represents the company to the customer as the primary interface; responsible for overall customer satisfaction, growth, and retention.
  • Monitors all facets of the trucking operation including profit and loss, pickup and delivery, customer service, and port interaction.
  • Provides the strategic direction in dealing with the customer so that all trucking activities are taken in concert with the client to allow both the client and Port Logistics Group to be successful financially.
  • Establishes and directs a plan of personnel development which will support customer requirements and specifications.
  • Confers with senior divisional management, reviews and analyzes activity, and operating and sales reports to determine whether modifications in programs or operations are required.
  • Analyzes budgets and productivity reports; works with senior management to identify areas in which reductions or modifications can increase service and decrease cost.
  • Oversees trucking activities to obtain optimum efficiency and economy and maximize profitability.
  • Direct corporate and divisional directives outlining policy, program, or operational actions to be implemented.
  • Managerial oversight includes interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees
  • Customer relationship management includes daily interface, customer service management, issue resolution, reporting and metrics development and tracking, and overall customer satisfaction.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years experience in transportation and supply chain solutions, or equivalent experience in related industry.
  • Proven track record of successful transportation management, including large customers with multi-year service agreements.
  • Strong knowledge of trucking processes, technology, transportation, port, dragged, and supply chain management.
  • Experience working with mass-market retailers is required; retail apparel experience a plus.
  • Excellent communication and customer interaction skills. Ability to assess problem, determine root cause, and work to resolution with a team.
  • Experience in a direct customer interaction role, with solid background of managing work teams to meet customer expectations.
  • Experience developing metrics reporting and interacting directly and frequently with customers.
  • Self-starter; ability to work independently.
  • Proven leadership ability; demonstrated ability to build, mentor, train, grow, and lead a team.
  • Functional experience in warehousing, transportation, and supply chain management.
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • BS/BA degree required; advanced degree a plus.
