Job Description

Youth Camp Guide

Guide/teach groups of Junior Mountaineers, 7-15 years of age. Responsible for overseeing outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing/rappelling, and mountain exploring, while providing excellent customer service to guests and presenting a professional image as a representative of the Alyeska Resort.

Main Duties:

  • To teach/guide group, outdoor activities, to guests ages 7 to 15
  • To present ourselves to the guest and fellow employees as professionals
  • Present ourselves as safety conscious employees, minimizing risk to injury
  • Attend ongoing training to keep up to date with contemporary concepts and progressions, striving to better our teaching and climbing techniques
  • Arrive at work on time, with equipment ready, uniform clean and tidy, presenting a professional appearance
  • Work as a team with your colleagues and other mountain departments so that all may benefit from working in an environment of good will and mutual respect
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the MLC Director or Supervisors, as well as other Mountain Managers

Skills/Requirements: The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Successful completion of Alyeska Resort Rock and Rappel Training
  • Prior Climbing instructing and guiding or other teaching experience preferred
  • Able to hike for extended periods of time, requiring lifting, bending and twisting
  • Thorough knowledge of climbing equipment and accessories
  • Ability to work Wednesday through Friday
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

  • Physical demands:  Instructors/guides must be physically able to safely navigate all in-bounds areas in all weather and trail conditions.  You will be required to hike and talk for extended periods of time.  Lifting heavy objects (no more than 50 pounds), bending, twisting and shoveling may be required.  You will be required to stand, hike, and climb/rappel safely on uneven terrain.  Employee may be required to pass a functional capacity test developed for this job.
  • Work Environment:  the noise in this work environment is usually moderate.  Physical terrain in the work environment can be uneven with poor traction; there is mud, rock, and gravel outside and wet floors indoors.  Outside temperatures can be cold and wet.
