Job Description

This Research Scientist position focuses on design and development of medical devices, drug delivery systems, and combination products. This position will implement product design with compliance to all quality and regulatory requirements. This is a full-time, on-site position in a hands-on laboratory environment. This role is an Independent Contributor role. There are no direct reports for this position. Interaction is potentially with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities for Research Scientist:

  • Create and analyze prototype product for medical devices and drug delivery systems.
  • Formulation development with medical grade polymers and pharmaceutical agents.
  • Synthesis and chemical modification of polymers.
  • Apply analytical techniques with the ability to interpret results for project recommendations.
  • Design experiments to provide data based conclusions about a process or product performance.
  • Project member for new design and development teams of drug delivery polymers and medical devices.
  • Write technical reports detailing procedures, outcomes, and observations.
  • Assist in creation of publishable research findings in the form of abstracts, papers and grants.
  • Support patent filing and claims.
  • Documentation of experimental findings in laboratory notebooks using good documentation practices (GDP).
  • Interface with cross-functional team members to develop specifications, coordinate prototype fabrication of customer designed parts, and transition prototypes into manufactured components.
  • Work independently in execution of project tasks with minimal oversight.

Required/Preferable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for Research Scientist:

  • Prior experience with medical and/or pharmaceutical grade materials preferred, especially bioabsorbable/bioresorbable materials.
  • Prior experience in formulation development and characterization.
  • Prior experience with the development and characterization of drug delivery systems.
  • Familiarity with polymer synthesis equipment and setup.
  • Prior experience with pharmaceutical testing regulatory requirements, particularly for drug delivery systems/combination products.
  • Prior experience in oversight/execution of technical project tasks and milestones.
  • Prior experience in leading interdisciplinary research projects would be beneficial.
  • Ability to design experiments and evaluate data using polymer characterization/analytical techniques (viscosity, FTIR, GPC, DSC, SEM, TGA, HPLC, mechanical testing etc.).
  • Prior experience in in vitro degradation and active agent release studies and corresponding sample preparations for analysis.
  • Prior experience with conducting literature and patent searches.
  • Ability to handle confidential business information.
  • Understanding of statistical methods and associated statistical analysis software. Preferred experience with Minitab.
  • Understanding of cause-effect relations between process inputs and product specifications.
  • Prior experience with developing and performing test methods in accordance with USP, FDA, and/or ASTM standards is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in an ISO 9001, ISO 13485, or GMP facility is preferred.
  • Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills for project execution and internal communication purposes utilizing available resources such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Project software would be beneficial.

Education/Experience Requirements for Research Scientist:

  • Required- Ph.D. with 3+ years industry experience
  • Example applicable degrees include: Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Materials Science

Environmental Requirements for Research Scientist:

  • Must be able to adapt to multiple indoor work environments (shared office space, shared lab space and production areas)

This position is in a production environment where the use of personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety shoes are mandated. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; some exposure to changes in temperature, noise, dust, and chemicals.
