The Vision
PLS envisions becoming the life sciences investment industry's best tech-enabled investment platform. The AI team aims to provide best-in-class intelligence support across all steps of the investment process, from deal sourcing to exit. The Role
As a PLS Computational Biologist, you will be a member of our new global AI and data intelligence team. This team’s goal is to build state of the art data and AI technology with strong research fundamentals for our life sciences investment arm. Utilizing your expertise in computational biology and bioinformatics, you will carry out research and provide critical insights through data and intelligence to support the investment process. You will capture cutting-edge biological insights in the life sciences and assist in building technical and scientific products and tools that provide intelligence and predictions from varied and growing datasets. Responsibilities
- Research and map multiple biological data sets such as metagenomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, single cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, CRISPR screens, mass spectrometry, pathway and biological systems data and others
- Proficiency in high-throughput data analysis and a good understanding of biological systems, being an advisor to the technical team on biological subject matters
- Track, develop and maintain the implementation of novel bioinformatics tools and algorithms to serve research purposes
- Map out and study the competitive landscapes of new drugs, modalities, methodologies, research tools, digital health advances across a range of disease indications mapped to its biological data
- Take ownership of research projects on certain disease indications, pathways, targets, drugs, patents, etc. to generate findings and insights that may lead to certain investment directions
- Work closely with the investment team to understand the business needs, and provide the investment team with insights on scientific due diligence of new investment opportunities
- Work closely with the technology team to analyze and visualize the multiple datasets and develop disease/technology maps and build applications for research and investment use
- Work closely with data scientists to leverage both public and proprietary data sources to consolidate, analyze and extract valuable information to facilitate investment decisions
- Analyze and interpret bioinformation data, and present to the investment team
Requirements
- PhD or master’s degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology or similar field
- 3-5 years of applied work experience in bioinformatics/computational biology field
- Experience with bioinformatics pipelines, tools, and open-source data sets
- Extensive experience in analyzing large-scale biological data and disease pathways
- Proficiency in programming language such as Python or R
- Openness to working in and learning the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – willingness to use software development practices such as unit testing, code reviews, and version control
- Proficiency in SQL
- Familiarity with public databases and tools
- Able to work with an international team with demonstrated ability to implement new ideas in a research environment and to drive projects collaboratively
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Fluency in English
- Ability to work in the US without employer visa support
- Hybrid work schedule: Able to be in San Francisco office, in-person at least 3 days per week, option to work from home 2 days per week
