Position Title: Lead Counselor

Reports to: Executive Director

Summary: This position shall oversee the clinical aspects of the treatment program. It is responsible for the coordination and continuity of care from admission through discharge and follow-up of the patients. This position will provide clinical supervision to the counseling staff, provide direct care, and maintain an appropriate caseload. This position will provide service delivery that is aligned with the agency's mission.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide supervision of the clinical aspects of the treatment program to include supervision of the counselors and all forms of therapy
  2. Ensure the timely completion of patient databases, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other essential documentation in accordance with applicable federal, state, and accrediting body standards as well as agency policies and procedures
  3. Provide patients with orientation to the program regarding objectives, levels of care, expectations and requirements, hours of services, patient rights, and additional information to help patients adjust to the program
  4. Ensure each patient is assessed and placed at the appropriate level of care in accordance with federal and state standards as well as agency policies
  5. Conduct individual, group, and family counseling
  6. Teach psycho-education groups
  7. When necessary, provide crisis intervention for patients using programmatic tools
  8. Work with pre-contemplative patients to enhance motivation for change
  9. Regularly coordinate and communicate with referral resources, family, and other entities important in the lives of patients in order to gather collateral information and coordinate treatment
  10. Arrange referrals to other agencies and resources in the community when appropriate
  11. Perform treatment plan reviews
  12. Participate in treatment team presentations and meetings
  13. Develop and increase knowledge of federal, state, accrediting body and agency rules and regulations that govern and guide treatment practices
  14. Secure necessary documentation from patient, when appropriate, to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  15. Submit monthly and quarterly quality improvement reports to supervisor
  16. Ensure that the Human Rights of the patient are recognized and honored and that any potential violations are reported according to agency policies and in accordance with federal and state standards
  17. Understand and fulfill the responsibilities of mandated reporting as defined by state statute
  18. Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

● A master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology,marriage and family therapy, or related field with at least 5 years of experience in the substance abuse field, with increasing responsibility in supervision and program development

● The Lead Counselor shall be licensed by the applicable Virginia Health Registry Board

● Have a working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, the ASAM Dimensions, Self-Help Recovery Support Programs such as AA, NA, DRA, SMART and Medication Assisted Treatment

● Skilled in individual, group and family counseling

● Ability to teach psycho-education groups

● Ability to navigate technology to include, but not limited to, e-mail, Word, Excel, and an EHR

● Excellent verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills

● Experience providing supervision and training to counselors

● Experience in a treatment environment for substance use disorders, to include medication assisted treatment,preferred
