Job Description

Non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. is offering an internship for a student currently enrolled in graduate level studies in the fields of nutrition or public health or in a dietetic internship program for a full-time, eight-week, remote internship promoting plant-based diets starting in spring 2024.

About the Physicians Committee

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is dedicated to saving and improving human and animal lives through plant-based diets and ethical and effective scientific research. Our vision is to create a healthier world through a new emphasis on plant-based nutrition, and scientific research conducted ethically, without using animals. We invite you to visit our YouTube channel, our website, and Physicians Committee president Dr. Neal Barnard's blog.

About the Physicians Committee's Nutrition Team

Over the past three decades, the Physicians Committee's nutrition department has achieved many important successes. We have contributed to the elimination of the "meat group" in federal nutrition guidelines, carried out clinical research studies that have revolutionized the treatment of diabetes, and provided the scientific foundation for the health benefits of plant-based diets. We aim to propel continued progress through direct patient care, nutrition education, and advocacy.

About this Internship Opportunity

The Susan Levin internship honors the late Susan Levin, MS, RD, CSSD, who served as the Physicians Committee's Director of Nutrition Education for 17 years. Susan Levin fought long and hard for better health and nutrition, not only for the patients under her care and for the participants in the programs she led, but for society as a whole.

Participating in this internship is a valuable opportunity to work with an organization at the forefront of the movement to change the way doctors, dietitians, and other health professionals treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer.

The Susan Levin Nutrition Intern will work with the nutrition team on local and federal nutrition-related policies and developing nutrition education resources, campaigns, and programs. Learning opportunities may also include:

  • Developing educational materials and presentations
  • Assisting with literature reviews
  • Assisting with recipe development
  • Supporting educational programs such as the Food for Life and Let's Beat Breast Cancer programs

This internship will be remote. Interns located in Washington, D.C. may also have the opportunity to participate in in-person activities and events. All interns will receive an orientation at the start of their internship and ongoing support from their staff mentor. Interns who are in dietetic internship programs will be mentored by one of our registered dietitians. The Physicians Committee will assist the intern in obtaining course credit if applicable.

Who We're Looking For

Applicants should currently be enrolled in graduate level studies in the fields of nutrition or public health or in a dietetic internship program. Applicants should also have a strong interest in plant-based nutrition and excellent research, writing, presentation, and problem-solving skills.

Terms

This is a full-time, eight-week, remote internship. The exact schedule and the start and end dates can be flexible to accommodate the intern's program and location. The internship compensation is $17 per hour. The Physicians Committee is located in the Metro-accessible Friendship Heights neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

The Physicians Committee can only accept applications from candidates who will be living in and working from the following jurisdictions at the time of the internship/fellowship: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Virginia.

All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
