Position Summary
The Design Manager manages and directs Design staff and external design services in the design of both print and digital product components. The Manager works closely with the Design Director, the full design team, and Editorial counterparts to assure that the overall vision of a given program is reflected in its art and design; monitors design schedules; helps to create and disseminate design procedures; manages, monitors project art and design budgets; fosters respectful cross-functional relationships.
Scope
The Design Manager is responsible for the design development of differentiated and valued products and solutions that have annual revenues that exceed $50m; responsible for contributing to the development of plant budgets; accountable for the effective design management of ~$1-2m in annual plant budgets depending on the publishing cycle; responsible for managing a team of ~2-6 people.
Responsibilities
Fiscal responsibilities(budget and/or revenue)
Manages average annual design plant budget of $1 to 2 million. Manages the budget process for assigned program components. Oversees the art and photography budgets for programs. Contributes art and design cost information to plant forecasts.
Supervisory responsibilities(direct and indirect)
Identifies resource needs (staff and Development House resources) for assigned programs.
Manages a staff of 2-6 persons. Management responsibility includes participation in the interview and hiring process, performance management, assignment of tasks and training.
Oversees work of outside resources; monitors performance related to cost, quality and schedule.
Core responsibilities: Design, Production, and Technology
Able to brainstorm new, innovative, and competitive product.
Able to design in both print and digital formats; understands graphic design issues and trends.
Is familiar with educational products marketplace and trends.
Maintains current understanding of advances in design, technology and trends; has a good understanding of hardware and software capabilities and limitations.
Supports use of the Pearson CMS and guides submission of new assets to the database.
Keeps up-to-date on advances in production technology.
Understands production and manufacturing constraints/cost factors; is able to develop solutions to work within constraints.
Core Responsibilities: Leadership and Management:
Promotes an attitude of teamwork and cooperation within the organization.
Serves on and contributes to special project task-forces and committees, as needed.
Other Responsibilities: Administration
Staff
Supervises overall performance of in-house design team and outside design firms.
Provides input to staff performance appraisals.
Helps to interview and evaluate candidates; recommends employees to Design VP.
Directs design staff and temps regarding procedures, duties, standards, and approved work methods.
Other Responsibilities: Communication
Internal
Communicates and interacts regularly with Editorial and Publishing Services staff to maintain an understanding of content needs, issues, and opportunities,
Interacts regularly with project team members in Design, Publishing Services, Manufacturing, Editorial, Marketing, and Technology.
External
Sets program design objectives with input from Editorial and Marketing; communicates objectives to outside design/production services.
Keeps outside services informed on changes to development plant.
Qualifications
Related work experience
3-6 years of publishing experience, including a solid understanding of editorial, production, manufacturing, marketing, sales, and customer service roles and relationships
Experience managing concurrent development of multiple components
Experience managing art and design budgets
Solid understanding of design solutions and manufacturing cost impacts on the P & L
Experience in personnel management and working collaboratively across functional areas
Formal education
A BA/BFA from an accredited four-year college specializing in graphic design/fine art, or graduate of an art school or equivalent design work experience.
Skills
Thorough knowledge of contemporary design trends and how they apply to company product lines
Strategic thinker with the ability to translate product strategies into innovative and profitable products and services
Effective problem team player and problem solver
Strong track record in developing innovative solutions
Able to follow budget and schedule parameters
Strong communication skills
Excellent collaborator
Working knowledge of UX, Human Centered Design, and Holistic Design concepts
Strong knowledge of design software and hardware; including, but not limited to InDesign, Sketch, and Zeplin
