Partners for Youth with Disabilities - Access to Theatre Art Teacher

Seeking part time temporary teaching artist (visual arts)

Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD (Partners for Youth with Disabilities)) goal is to create a world where young people with disabilities will be able to live with dignity and pride in who they are, and to lead self-determined lives filled with purpose. To make this happen, we build the skills and abilities of young people with disabilities, and increase the inclusivity of workplaces, organizations, and communities. 

Schedule and Location:

Days/Times: Tuesdays  with additional weekly one hour planning time

Dates: April 11- May 24th (off April 17- 21)

Location: performance venue, Dorchester, MA 

Description:

Artistic skills:

  • To teach visual arts to students in an inclusive setting in a community-based program. Experience teaching art skills and various art techniques (e.g. drawing, acrylic painting, watercolors, sketching, and more) required.

Communication skills:

  • Excellent verbal and listening skills are essential for art teachers to have to facilitate regular interactions with students with and without disabilities and making it accessible. Experience with group supervision. Clearly explain art assignments, art techniques, art materials, art history and aesthetics. Being able to respond to questions and concerns and encourage students to express their unique ideas and opinions in their own creative process.

Interpersonal skills:

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills to get along with students and various staff associated with the program. Collaborate with Creative Youth Development Program Manager.

Empathic skills:

What You’ll Do:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Planning lessons on art in accordance with students' learning objectives.
  • Preparing the classroom by gathering and setting up equipment.
  • Developing students' drawing, coloring, and painting techniques.
  • Providing instruction on the use of media such as graphite and charcoal pencils, as well as oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint.
  • Recording and reporting on students' progress.
  • Ensuring that the classroom is clean after each session.
  • Monitoring inventory and sourcing art supplies, as needed.
  • Attending artist meetings

Who You Are:

You must be:

  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S
  • Passionate about working with youth with disabilities
  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts with teaching qualification, or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior experience as an art teacher
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of art techniques.
  • Able to independently travel across Eastern Massachusetts
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend programming
  • An excellent verbal and written communicator
  • Able to work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently

It would also be great if you:

  • Bilingual skill in ASL, Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Mandarin

Compensation: $60/hour for certified teacher

Supervision: This position reports to the Creative Youth Development Program Manager

Since this position is for a limited term, part time engagement, the successful candidate will be designated for hire by an employment agency contracting with PYD. The employment agency will be the employer of record for this position.
