Job Description

Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking an Online Advocacy Specialist for Public Affairs team. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week. SUMMARY

The Online Advocacy Specialist supports both c3 and c4 entities, Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) and Planned Parenthood Northern California Action Fund (PPNorCal AF). Leads and executes communications strategy in support of both entities through a variety of internally produced content for public consumption that includes website, new media, and e-mail. The Online Advocacy Specialist also supports Public Affairs department activities such as online fundraising, budgeting, data entry, database management, community, and grassroots advocacy, lobbying and legislative activity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Design and implement the PPNorCal and PPNorCal AF online strategy, including, but not limited to, websites, e-mail communication, social networking, and use of other new media (e. g., video, audio) as appropriate.

  • Develop and manage Public Affairs pages on the PPNorCal and PPNorCal Action Fund websites, to include posting regular updates, features, media opportunities, regional events, etc.
  • Serve as liaison and collaborate with the Public Affairs department and Development department developing agency-wide communications strategies, including the drafting and review of content produced for email, online, mail, and other products.
  • Coordinate and assist with implementation of the digital marketing plan to increase patient acquisition, supporter engagement, and advance the overall image and mission of PPNorCal. Protect the integrity of the PPNorCal brand.
  • Provide front line support for marketing and advertising on various digital platforms.
  • Maintain familiarity with Planned Parenthood’s most current national style guide, branding, and trademark policies and ensure PPNorCal compliance.
  • Conduct regular analysis and report the status of online marketing, recruitment, and advocacy activities.
  • Analyze online and social media data to evaluate efforts quantitatively.
  • Ensure proper list management, including the strategic use of available lists, development of appropriate list agreements and update and maintain clean databases.
  • Support Public Affairs staff in the use of various activist databases, including VAN and PDI-Q.
  • Manage and maintain the voter file and assist Director of Public Affairs with the generation of data necessary for phone banking, canvassing, etc.
  • Maintain and promote awareness of best practices and trends in online activism and data management.
  • Aid in the release of PPNorCal affiliate-wide communications, such as the e-newsletter, periodic written newsletters, and annual report to donors and key activists.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the law governing electoral work including campaign finance law. Manage local voter guide information each election cycle for PPNorCal AF, PPAC and PPAF.
  • Utilize graphic design programs to produce content for PPNorCal AF electoral campaigns, including but not limited to mailers, digital ads, and radio ads.
  • In collaboration with Development Department, manage Action Fund online fundraising program.
  • Track campaign expenditures for internal as well as external reporting purposes.
  • Work with Public Affairs Director to track all PPNorCal AF expenditures and income.
  • Participate in PPAC and PPFA Technology and Communications conference calls and projects.
  • Stay current on the latest technological innovations. Work with others as appropriate to ensure that various data systems complement each other.
  • Provide administrative support to the Public Affairs department in general (i.e., Calendar, data and filing systems, invoicing, staffing timesheets, and mileage reports, etc.).
  • Provide support to the Director of Public Affairs and the Public Affairs department as needed.
  • Actively participate in and support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives of PPNorCal.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Four years’ experience in public affairs, community engagement, government relations, communications, or related field.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Must be web-savvy with a solid understanding of current and emerging online trends and tactics.

Experience developing interactive viral marketing campaigns.

Electronic voter file software experience strongly preferred.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, database management including Every Action/VAN. Adobe InDesign/Illustrator, Photoshop. Some graphic design experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have reliable automobile transportation and a valid California Driver’s License and insurance.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Demonstrate experience in public policy, political engagement, and issue advocacy and have a strong understanding of health care policy.
  • A solid understanding of website content development and management and database management, knowledge and experience with EveryAction/VAN and Django, donor management and fundraising software, and electronic voter file software a plus.
  • Understanding of the relationship between online and community organizing, and the communications tools involved with both.
  • Proven political or issue-oriented experience in a campaign or non-profit organization.
  • Some community organizing or grassroots advocacy experience required, for example, the ability to engage community members, staff or volunteers around issues impacting them and their community.
  • Commitment to advancing health equity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles.
  • Experience working with print vendors and other web professionals.
  • Detail-oriented individual with strong proofreading, writing, communication, computer, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and controversial issues and to translate information for broader audiences. For example, responding to social media comments.
  • Experience using web CMS and e-mail marketing programs.
  • Proven interest in the legislative and electoral side of the reproductive health debate.
  • Commitment to quality health care.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
    • Ability to juggle multiple demanding projects at the same time. Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a sometimes chaotic and deadline-driven environment.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish, highly desired.
