Project Executive (Heavy Civil/Highway Construction)

Provide overall management direction for assigned project group and develop new business opportunities relative to a particular client, group of clients, geographical area, or type of project. Typical business unit and/or project size is in excess of $40 million.


  1. Plan, organize, and staff key field positions through Vice President, Operations and/or executive management.
  2. Establish project objectives, procedures, and performance standards within boundaries of corporate policy, including all project level administration and documentation.
  3. Initiate and maintain liaison with client and A/E contacts to facilitate construction activities.
  4. Monitor/control construction through administrative direction of on-site staffing to ensure project is built on schedule and within budget; investigate potentially serious situations and implement corrective measures. Monitor compliance with company safety program.
  5. Review contracts and contract language with executive management prior to execution.
  6. Tailor and review subcontract template with executive management prior to issuance, negotiate and revise subcontracts with executive management input as needed.
  7. Represent company in project meetings, assist in labor negotiations/strategy meetings, etc.
  8. Manage financial aspects of contracts (fee payment, change orders, rental equipment, income/expenses, etc.) to protect company's interest and simultaneously maintain good relationship with client.
  9. Continually monitor the schedule and profitability of assigned project or groups of projects and initiate collective action immediately when problems arise.
  10. Supervise the work of Project Managers when assigned.
  11. Responsible for development and accuracy of quantity profit projections for assigned project or group of projects.
  12. Assume additional responsibilities as directed by corporate executive.


Educational and experience requirements include: four-year engineering degree or equivalent, plus extensive (fifteen or more years) experience/knowledge of construction, design, finance, and management required. Must be able to apply innovative and effective management techniques to

maximize employee performance. Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc., and their impact on project activities vital; superior communication and interpersonal (tact, diplomacy, influence, etc.) skills essential. Significant business skills required including marketing and presentation.


Reports to Vice President, Operations and/or executive management. Makes decisions and recommendations, which can greatly affect profitability of assigned area. Makes significant, independent judgments. Responsible for careful observance of corporate policies and objectives. Position has overall profit/loss responsibility for assigned project or group of projects. Exempt under FLSA.
