P3I, Incorporated is looking to hire an Optical Engineer to support the Optical Engineering Group. This group designs, models, analyzes, and tests optical, electro-optical, and opto-mechanical systems and components, including sensors, lasers, fiber-optics, and telecommunications products. Conducts research and development into phases of physical optics and geometric optics, lasers, laser characteristics, laser maintenance, and broadband optical sources. Applies research of complex optical systems to achieve desired optical outcomes. Develops component specifications, tolerances, simulations and tests procedures for electro-optical systems and components. Uses design-to-cost models, six sigma methodology, and other methods to assure and verify optical design requirements are met.

The candidate will support staff members in developing a variety of optical systems including telescopes, lens assemblies, laser optics, focal plane assemblies and fiber optics for space and airborne applications. This position involves assembling and aligning complex optical systems using a variety of optical instruments, performing optical testing, and specifying and purchasing optical components. The candidate will also help organize and maintain the Group's optical facilities and instrumentation. The position may require special security clearances and travel to meetings and field sites.


  • Minimum of 3 to 7 years of experience in optical assembly and alignment.
  • Experience assembling, aligning and testing refractive and reflective optical components and systems.
  • Experience with optical alignment instruments such as interferometers, autocollimators, alignment telescopes, theodolites, profilometers and wavefront sensor
  • Experience with interferometric testing, precision lens assembly, high power lasers and fiber optics is strongly desired
  • Broad understanding of optical fabrication techniques and shall be capable of evaluating vendors for custom manufacturing requirements.
  • Capable of performing incoming inspection on a variety of procured items and therefore needs a working knowledge of optical fabrication specifications.
  • Strong Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with space systems and laser communication / lasercom system testing. Three years of testing experience would be desired.

On site Requirements:

Onsite work is 80% with approximately 20% working from home. There may be some fluctuations when project work requires more interaction with hardware and require more onsite work.

**Travel - potential travel to domestic sites.


**Candidate must be a US citizen and hold a valid DoD security clearance.
