Student Worker: Peer Tutor

Work Unit Description
Peer Tutors are responsible for providing academic assistance to undergraduate students in select coursework. Tutoring is not teaching, but rather supplemental learning for students needing additional assistance with course content. Tutors will be primarily engaged in assisting sophomore students with the pathophysiology and pharmacology course content (NRS 230, 231, 232, 233). The peer tutoring program at OHSU utilizes both group and one-on-one tutoring to assist students with course topics.

Functions/Duties of Position

  • Exhibit professional behavior and adhere to confidentiality requirements
  • Review and abide by the Tutoring Code of Ethics
  • Work with students in both group and individual settings
  • Have availability to meet with students for a minimum of 2 hours per week throughout the academic year (hours and times may vary between terms)
  • The more hours tutors are available, the more likely they will be utilized and matched for group and individualized sessions.
  • Submit anticipated availability for hours when applying.
  • Communicate with the tutoring coordinator as soon as possible if this changes during the term
  • Coach students on study skills, note taking, organization, and time management
  • Communicate with professors regarding individual student needs and progress
  • Maintain records of tutoring activities including time keeping and tutoring notes
Job Requirements
  • Current OHSU School of Nursing Student Undergraduate Junior or Senior level.
  • Have successfully passed the course in which tutoring is occurring with a grade of a "A" or B+ .
  • Recommendation of OHSU faculty member currently teaching coursework for pathophysiology and pharmacology.
  • Possess the ability and willingness to work with individuals and groups of students from diverse cultural, economic, and academic backgrounds.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintain an OHSU GPA of at least a 3.0.
