Job Description

Duration: 6 Months
Hours per week: 20 hours

Temp's work hours:

  • Up to 20 hours per week. Normal business hours are typically around 8:30AM-4:30PM EST.
  • The anticipated schedule for this position would be two 8-hour days and one 4-hour day per week.
  • Flexibility in schedule may be permitted if working on projects and contractor meets deliverables and deadlines.

  • Computer, monitor, fax machine/printer, telephone

Computer software to be used:

  • Microsoft Office, other software and databases used by the Virginia Department of Health

Knowledge, skills, education, and/or experience:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in public health or closely related field; 1-4 years of experience working with public health programs or in a closely related field; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Highly organized; Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and/or other database applications.
  • Experience in using data analysis software;
  • Experience in rare diseases, health care, and/or epidemiology;
  • Experience working in state or local public health departments;
  • Experience with councils, boards, or other advisory groups;
  • Experience applying for and managing grants; Experience with research and presentations.

Mandatory skills/certification(s) Requirement:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in public health or closely related field; 1-4 years of experience working with public health programs or in a closely related field; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Highly organized.

Desired skills:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Office of Family Health Services (OFHS), Division of Child and Family Health (DCFH), the Rare Disease Council Coordinator will be responsible for providing staff support to Virginia's Rare Disease Council.
  • The purpose of the Rare Disease Council is to advise the Governor and the General Assembly on the needs of individuals with rare diseases in Virginia.
  • Identify the challenges these individuals face; fund research and the development of new treatments for rare diseases; and fund supports for individuals with rare diseases in Virginia.

The Rare Disease Council Coordinator's specific activities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicating with Council members, rare disease experts, and researchers;
  • Preparing for and attending Council meetings and public hearings;
  • Documenting Council meeting minutes and public comments;
  • Creating, updating, and maintaining the Council's webpage;
  • Preparing the Council's annual report for submission to the General Assembly;
  • Researching to support the Council's objectives;
  • Applying for and managing grants;
  • Helping to manage funds to support the Council's work.

The Rare Disease Council Coordinator will also work directly with other VDH OFHS staff members, including the Birth Defects Surveillance (BDS) Program Coordinator, Newborn Screening and BDS Programs Manager, and the DCFH Director, to support the Council in meeting its objectives.
