AmeriCorps Member

Open Door Family Medical Centers Ossining, NY
  • Expired: over a month ago. Applications are no longer accepted.
Job Description

Open Door hosts a group of AmeriCorps members each year, and we currently have openings for the 2019-2020 program year.  In order to be a member, an individual needs to be a permanent resident or U.S. citizen, be 18 years or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be engaged and interested in health and serving our community. We are specifically looking for bilingual-speakers (English and Spanish), highly motivated individuals interested in giving a year of their lives to serve our community.

As community health educators and outreach workers, the AmeriCorps members receive training to teach young children about exercise and nutrition, to promote literacy among parents and children, and to make sure families have health insurance. They also help to distribute all of our gifts during Santa Days which are held across all of our sites.

This is a wonderful opportunity for those looking to transition back into the workforce, or for young individuals perhaps considering school but unsure how to pay for it, or those taking a gap year between college and medical school. The entry level experience in the healthcare field helps them gain experience and community connections.  If you know anyone that would be a particularly good fit, please see the attached flyer and share the information in this email. Interested candidates can apply for the program by visiting the following website: https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=5418&fromSearch=true

 please select the following:

If selected to participate in the program, members receive an annual stipend amounting to $14,000, an education award of $5,920, health insurance, childcare benefits, and student loan forbearance in exchange for their year of full-time service.  For more information, please email Sindy Louisma, AmeriCorps Program Administrator, at slouisma@odfmc.org or call 914-502-1392.

Company Description
For more than 45 years, Open Door has been a trusted resource for our local community. Every day, we educate and empower people to take charge of their health, so they can lead active, fulfilling lives.

Since our beginning in the basement of the First Baptist Church in 1972, our aim has remained constant: to provide high-quality health care that’s affordable, accessible, and efficient. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Open Door provides top-notch health care to those who are hardest to reach, regardless of their ability to pay. Often we serve patients who may not otherwise have access to care – including low-income families and individuals without insurance.

Beyond the medical, dental, and behavioral health care provided in our facilities, we promote wellness, good nutrition, stress reduction, and physical activity. Through our focus on prevention, we help to identify illnesses early and decrease the need for more expensive treatment down the road. Our goal is to help entire generations of families stay healthy.

Over the years, Open Door has risen to meet the growing demand for health care in Westchester and Putnam counties. We are proud to provide a medical home to nearly 57,000 local residents every year. Our award-winning Family Medical Centers have opened in a growing number of locations, and we operate numerous School-Based Health Centers to ensure that routine and preventive care is provided when and where children need it.

Good health affects everyone. We believe that when you help one person, you can lift up an entire community. Your community needs Open Door, and Open Door needs you. Learn more about our services, join us, and help us continue to grow.
