What You'll Do
Review, evaluate, and then accept/deny mortgage loan files using internal underwriting standards, investor underwriting standards (overlays), and general underwriting guidelines as conveyed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, to determine credit worthiness of the applicant. Maintain the credit union's profitability targets on loans sold into the secondary market by determining which investor to sell loans to on a case by case basis.

What That Means
  • Receives and reviews loan files for sufficient documentation to make informed loan decisions based on the product description and standard underwriting guidelines. If there is insufficient information, requests the required information or documentation from the processor, originator, and/or member.
  • Completes a thorough analysis of the loan package including sources of income and asset verification to determine compliance with credit union and/or investor requirements, making sound lending decisions and recommendations within established lending authority.
  • Reviews appraisals to determine the consistency of information, if the comparables have been used within reasonable tolerance to support the final value, and if any additional underwriting considerations need to be made based on the condition of the property or of other conditions recommended/required by the appraiser.
  • Selects the private mortgage insurance company to provide required coverage to all loan files requiring PMI.
  • Provides supporting documentation in the file if a policy, procedure, or guideline exception is made stating the type of exception and compensating factors to support the decision. Prepares and signs all conditional and final approval letters.
  • Provides effective and timely communication with all applicable parties including management, escrow, realtors, and staff to meet deadlines.

Required Skills
Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Completion of formal credit training program.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement Underwriter.
  • Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) VA Appraisal Underwriting Experience.

Required Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of successful mortgage underwriting for secondary market investors.
  • Minimum 7 years of banking experience.
