COMMUNITY LEGAL CLINIC OPERATING SOCIETY OF BC

(Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic)

 

The Community Legal Clinic Operating Society of BC (Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic) is currently recruiting for six permanent full-time positions to join our team of professionals for a new service delivery organization based in both the Kamloops and Kelowna areas. The society is committed to providing access to justice to the Okanagan Thompson area by providing free quality legal services and education to the community with a trauma informed approach. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be joining a team responsible for providing free legal services to the Okanagan Thompson areas with offices located in Kamloops and Kelowna

 

Legal Assistant

(Two positions - one for Kelowna and one for Kamloops)

The Legal Assistant provides administrative support and assistance to the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s), the Executive Director and others in the office as requested. Under the guidance of the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) the Legal Assistant will assist with the delivery of legal services in the areas of litigation by: filing court documents, drafting, preparing and proofreading legal, administration documents and correspondence, compiling information and other various tasks as required by the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) and Executive Director. The Legal Assistant will perform administrative tasks including maintaining, organizing and filing documents and correspondence, responding to client inquires and conducting follow-up meetings, being responsible for maintaining the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) and Executive Director’s calendar, calls from clients, directing clients to the appropriate staff member or referring to outside organizations or agencies. Other general administrative and reception related duties will also be assigned.

 

Candidates will have a diploma in paralegal studies or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training in an administrative or paralegal function, preferable\y within a legal environment. Demonstrated administrative, organizational and written and verbal communication skills are fundamental to this position. Candidates must be proficient with Word, Excel and BC On line.

 

Compensation - $29.00 to $34.00 per hour

Family Law Advocate

(Two positions - one for Kelowna and one for Kamloops)

 

The Family Law Advocate provides family law advocacy services to community members, including identifying legal issues such as, guardianship and parenting time, child support, spousal support, separation agreements, family court, Supreme Court, property and debts, and child protection information and guidance. Supporting clients through the civil court system, including court preparation and accompaniment and explaining the impact of orders and agreements are key in this role. The ability to prepare various forms of correspondence for clients and assisting clients with completing forms and preparing other documents are essential along with assisting clients to obtain access to Legal Aid. The Family Law Advocate develops and provides public legal education to the community in person and by webinar.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to successfully complete Family Law Advocate training courses provided by the Law Foundation, as well as attend their annual Provincial Training Conference and attend regular family law workshops delivered by the lawyer for the Family Advocate Support Line.

 

Candidates must be able to take initiative, identify urgent work items and set priorities and maintain open and direct communication between themselves, clients and colleagues and the ability to work effectively with clients who are experiencing a range of sensitive issues.

 

You will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Sociology, Psychology, or Family Law or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training in Paralegal services and Family Law and experience in direct program delivery in the Family Law advocacy sector is an asset. Excellent knowledge and understanding of provincial and supreme court family law forms, statutes and concepts are fundamental to this position.

 

Compensation - $ 29.00 to $35.00 per hour

Poverty Law Advocate

(Two Positions - one for Kelowna and one for Kamloops)

 

The Poverty Law Advocate provides clients with advocacy support and information as it pertains to poverty law issues specific to income assistance, provincial disability benefits, federal income security programs, employment insurance benefits, debt, and residential tenancy issues. This includes providing support, information, referrals, completion of forms, written communications on behalf of the client, negotiation and mediation, written appeals, representation at tribunal hearings and arbitration. The Poverty Law Advocate will act as a resource to other staff, volunteers, and support groups on an as needed basis. Developing positive working relationships with other advocates, the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, other government agencies and relevant groups and individuals are key to this role. The Poverty Law Advocate develops and provides public legal education to the community in person and by webinar.

 

Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written skills along with the ability to read, understand and interpret applicable legislation and government processes and procedures are fundamental to this position. Candidates must be able to negotiate and mediate on behalf of clients and have a strong sense of social justice and a desire to assist and improve the lives of marginalized individuals. Demonstrated experience in Office 2013 and Windows 10 are necessary in this role.

 

You will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Criminology, Psychology, Sociology or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training and a minimum of two years hands on experience with tenancy, disability and income support issues are required. Excellent knowledge and understanding of provincial and Supreme Court family law forms, statutes and concepts are fundamental to this position

 

Compensation - $ 29.00 to $35.00 per hour

All successful candidate(s) will be required to have a Police Information Check (PIC) as a condition of employment (Note - Not required as part of the application process, however, a PIC will be required upon consideration for employment).

 

All positions are permanent full time based on 35 hours per week and will be primarily be Monday to Friday. On occasion, candidates may be required to work the occasional evening and/or weekend.
