Twenty-Third Annual Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials

July 12 - July 22, 2023 (Arrivals on July 12th)
NOTE: There will be a Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening, July 12th, from 6:30pm - 8:00pm, for those that have arrived by that time.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • The course is designed primarily for early- to mid-career scientists who are pursuing a career in clinical research. It is open to interested researchers who received their doctoral degree (PhD, MD, Dr.PH, DO, etc.) in a relevant field after 2012. Individuals who received their doctoral degree before 2012 but who subsequently completed a relevant postdoctoral research training program or obtained a research-oriented degree such as an MPH or an MS in Clinical Investigation after 2012 are also eligible to apply.
  • Applicants should have had at least two years of relevant research experience.
  • The ideal candidate is actively pursuing a career in health-related behavioral intervention research.
  • Due to limited availability of space, preference will be given to citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, or those lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status).
  • Applicants should be willing and able to pay expenses associated with traveling to and attending the entire Summer Institute, if accepted.
Beyond these eligibility criteria, we are seeking individuals whose careers are likely to benefit from this training. Women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to individuals who are not employees of NIH.

Costs and Stipends:
Please note that there is no registration fee for the Summer Institute. Fellows will be responsible for the cost of travel to and from the Summer Institute site and room and board. Limited support may be available to offset a portion of these costs. Family members may accompany participants at their own expense.

Applicants who may wish to apply for the very limited number of scholarships to fund the majority of the costs to attend the Institute must submit an additional letter demonstrating financial need, and endorsed by their institutional leadership (Department Chair, Dean, etc.). This letter should not exceed one page. Please see the "Required Attachments" section for further information.

The 2023 Summer Institute will be held in person at the Bolger Center, Potomac, Maryland.

If you are accepted:

  • You will be expected to participate in the Pre-Institute and in the entire in-person Summer Institute program, and to complete all course evaluation forms.
  • You will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, including CDC-recommended boosters.

The Pre-Institute program will start on or before June 1. It includes some recommended readings and some online videos. Fellows will receive more information about the Pre-Institute sometime in May.

An email confirmation will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of the completed application.

Fellowship invitations will be sent out via email only, approximately March 17, 2023.
