Middle School Counselor / Human Development instructor

Oakwood is seeking a Middle School Counselor/Human Development instructor. Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling and Wellness, this is a part time position (approx. 20 hours per week) for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Counselor plays a significant role in addressing the social and emotional needs and challenges of the students, parents, and at times, the faculty. The Counselor is available to meet with students, faculty, and parents individually or in groups for consultation, assessment, therapeutic support, and resource referral. This role will primarily focus on the 7th and 8th grades. The Counselor/HD instructor is expected to model ethical and professional practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
COUNSELING
- Work with individual students and their families on social, emotional, and behavioral issues that may affect their school experience
- Assess and counsel families as needed regarding issues that impact their child, e.g., divorce, loss of a family member, significant transitions, social problems, trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse issues, parenting, etc.
- Support teachers, students, and families with crisis interventions and referrals
- Collaborate with outside professionals as needed to support students and families
- Facilitate student support groups addressing issues of body image, self-worth, respect and boundaries, identity, conflict resolution, loss/change, and stress management
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Participate in weekly faculty/staff meetings
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings strategizing supportive interventions for students with serious academic and/or behavioral challenges
- Participate weekly in Student Success Team meetings with the Dean of Students, Counseling and Wellness Team, and Academic Success Team
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT/EDUCATION
- Coordinate grade-level seminars regarding Values Identification and Formation, Consent and Harassment, Growth and Development/Healthy Sexuality, Cyber Safety, and Drug Education
- Teach 7th and 8th grade Human Development classes
- Serve as liaison with community service providers
- Educational support and programming:
- Promotes student well-being by supporting the division dean, the Counseling and Wellness Team in the development of comprehensive programming and implementation of a 7th and 8th-grade health and wellness curriculum (using outside resources as appropriate)
REQUIREMENTS
- A master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, or social work is required.
- Licensure/certification required
- Three years of school experience required
- Middle school teaching experience preferred
- Experience delivering SEL curricula to students
- Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with colleagues and parents.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative school environment
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and social justice both in and out of the classroom
Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Comfort with using various technology platforms (such as Blackbaud and Google Suite)
Compensation:
The estimated annual salary is $35,000-50,000
(based on a part-time hours, approximately 20 hours per week)
