Job Description: The Certified Special Education Teacher is responsible for managing all aspects of the classroom, including supervision of staff and students, development, implementation, and monitoring of programs which seek to develop the functional academic, vocational, social, and ADL skills of students, to enhance independence and quality of life, in keeping with Oak Hill’s mission. The classrooms are located at or near our Hartford Campus. Essential Job Duties & ResponsibilitiesClassroom Environment, Student engagement, and Commitment to Learning: Becomes familiar with information about students, to ensure that programs which are developed and implemented meet their needs, and provide consistency in program implementationIn conjunction with the PPT, develops an Individualized Educational Plan for each student, based on formal and informal assessment of student needsCompletes student assessments and ecological inventories with goals in support of the interdisciplinary team process objectivesCreates a positive learning environment that is responsive to and respectful of the learning needs of the studentsPromotes developmentally appropriate standards of behavior that support a productive learning environment for all studentsMaximizes instructional time by effectively managing routines and transitionsInstruction for Active Learning: Develops and implements instructional plans and data sheets for goals and objectives on each student’s IEP as well as other appropriate educational, medical, behavioral, and recreational activities aligned with Oak Hill School philosophies and educational modelImplements instructional content for learning (academic, ADL, behavior, and therapeutic programs developed by the Trans-Disciplinary Team); Coordinates and writes students schedules outlining routines, providing structure to the school day, and encompassing all required instruction and therapeutic recommendationsWrites and submits quarterly progress reports and participates in quarterly meeting with parentsLeads students to construct meaning and apply new learning through the use of a variety of differentiated and evidence- based learning strategies that meet individual needs of each studentAssesses student learning, providing feedback to students, families, support staff, and administration and adjusting instruction as neededPlanning for Active Learning:Plans instructional content that is aligned with standards, builds on students’ prior knowledge, and provides for appropriate level of challenge for all students; thematic plan, master schedule, and scaffolding instruction.Plans instruction to cognitively and actively engage students in the contentSelects appropriate assessment strategies to monitor student’s progress.Professional Responsibilities and Teacher Leadership: Collaborating and attending trans-disciplinary meetings; exchanges information, evaluates and determines need for program modifications.Engages in continuous professional learning to impact instruction and student learningCollaborates to develop and sustain a professional learning environment to support student learningSubmits data from restrictive behavior programs to the Behavior Specialist for monthly program review, to facilitate assessment and evaluationCoordinates home and residential communication and returns feedback to related service professionals to ensure coordinationWorking with colleagues, students and families to develop and sustain a positive school climate that supports student learningParticipates in curricula groups, and other assignments in support of Oak Hill School mission, vision and goalsStaff Supervision and Training: Addresses staff disciplinary issues; determines implications, and implements/recommends appropriate disciplinary actions up to the hearing of first step grievances, and communicates to employee as appropriateCompletes annual performance evaluations of all classroom staffTrains and communicates Oak Hill’s policies to staff, state and federal regulations, health & safety practices and procedures, and any other applicable laws and regulations. Target Outcomes & Measures for SuccessThrough assessments, planning, and organization, coupled with excellent staff management skills, creates Oak Hill classroom environments that are conducive to effective learning centers for students.Supports the Trans-disciplinary team in creating and providing individualized programming to support student’s individual needs resulting in student academic achievement and growth.Consults, assesses and plans within the educational philosophy and mission resulting in sustaining student census and increasing future enrollments. Impact on Organization In collaboration with the trans-disciplinary team, the Special Education Teacher will utilize effective methods to empower students to learn through meaningful functional and innovative educational experiences which build self-advocacy, independence, and reinforce the dignity of students and as a result will further the over-arching mission to enhance lifelong learning and opportunities for people with disabilities. Critical Work Relationships and Work Flow Interdependencies The Special Education Teacher may have contact with any person who falls within the range of Oak Hill’s School programs, and includes students, parents, direct care staff, teachers, instructional assistants, other persons on the Trans-disciplinary team and districts and agency representatives. Complexity Manage and/or oversee the intricacies of the overarching goals of the classroom coupled with the ability to analyze research, assess, organize, plan and implement creative ways of supporting students with disabilities to improve their academic progress and quality of life. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation: Special Education Master’s Degree; Valid State of Connecticut Department of Education Special Education Teacher Certification. Skills/Training/Experience: Teacher experience Competency: Teaching - Implementation of Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching and instruction in all subject areas inclusive of occupational/life skills; content knowledge of various disabilities, the impact of disabilities on classroom performance; strategies on how to facilitate student learning & behavior management; and ability to collaborate and consult within the Oak Hill school community. Organizational skills; ability to make independent decisions with good judgement. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTSEducation: Special Education Master’s Degree; Valid State of Connecticut Department of Education Special Education Teacher Certification; TEAM Mentor Skills/Training/Experience: 5 years of teaching experience in a similar type educational setting. Competency: A). Teaching – Experience and demonstrated implementation of Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching and instruction in all subject areas inclusive of occupational/life skills; content knowledge of various disabilities, the impact of disabilities on classroom performance; strategies on how to facilitate student learning & behavior management; and ability to collaborate and consult within the Oak Hill school community. B.) Classroom Management – Supervisory skills coupled with excellent interpersonal skills (ability to appropriately manage/delegate staff as it applies to insuring student access to education).
