SUMMARY

The medical assistant provides high quality care to meet departmental goals; the medical assistant responsibly and cost effectively manages equipment, supplies and ancillary services; the medical assistant establishes communication and maintains good working relationships with physicians and office personnel to facilitate quality patient care; the medical assistant demonstrates an understanding of non-judgmental care as it relates to the psychological and emotional needs of the patients.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Including, but not limited to the following :

    • Respond to all medical patient telephone messages for assigned physicians/providers, following practice protocols and within the time frame allocated. Consult directly with the physician as directed in compliance with practice procedures
    • Document and chart all patient medical information in compliance with practice standards
    • Follow through on all patient requested lab results, etc
    • Report all lab results received verbally (telephone) , electronically and written to treating/ordering physician
    • Provide patient education as directed by physician
    • Demonstrate appropriate priority receiving and managing all patient telephone messages, with accountability for all follow-up and information given to physician and patients
    • Maintain orderly and efficient/timely flow of patients and to
    • Obtain weight and height
    • Take blood pressure (temperature when necessary)
    • Collect specimens (blood, urine, etc.)
    • Take medical history information
    • Prepare patients for exam, having them in proper undress
    • Administer tests and treatments as directed by physician
    • Assist physician as needed
    • Clean and maintain patient rooms and restrooms between patient visits and at end of day
    • Keep charts current with dates, signatures and pertinent patient information including
    • Prepare patients charts before vis it - assure that all forms and information needed for patient care is present including verifying accurate patient name, results and documentation
    • Document information obtained and services provided during patient visit and sign and date all entries
    • Document drugs prescribed or any other pertinent medical information
    • Document all telephone calls and results and follow-up
    • Maintain file and follow-up system on all lab results (pap smears, mammograms, etc.)
    • Maintain current and accurate OB log including pre-certification, benefits verification for tracking all OB patients care through delivery and billing
    • Maintain current and accurate logs and other documentation required by CLIA, OSHA and other regulatory agencies and comply with these regulations in performing duties
    • Maintain current and accurate reference guides including contacts, phone #s and other information necessary to schedule tests and procedures and to obtain precertification/authorization
    • Maintain examination rooms. Stock supplies on a daily basis
    • Prepare trays or carts for procedures such as cryosurgery, colposcopy, ultrasound etc.
    • Inventory and order medical supplies based on policies and procedures
    • Clean examination rooms between patient visits and thoroughly at end of day; maintain exam room set up as directed by the physician and consistent with practice policy/procedure
    • Complete lab requisition forms
    • File lab work into patient charts after physician review + document physician directed follow-up
    • Schedule patients for outside and hospital procedures as directed by physician
    • Maintain samples and other medical supplies in accordance with regulations and practice policy/procedure
    • Coordinate time away from duties with the Physician/Office Manager to be continuously covered at all times during the clinic working hours
    • Maintain strict confidentiality in regards to patient account status, medical records, personnel records and any and all clinical business information
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Physician and/or Office Manager

    • Knowledge and skilled at providing optimal customer service
    • Knowledge of medical office patient care processes to facilitate timely and appropriate patient care
    • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
    • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
    • Skill in identifying problems, researching and recommending solutions
    • Skill in preparing and maintaining records and writing reports
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and public
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
    • Ability to communicate clearly
    • Skill in identifying and resolving problems

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • 2 years of experience; OBGYN preferred

    * *REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • High school or equivalent
    • Completed Medical Assistant Program
