Lab Manager, Anatomy & Neurobiology

The successful applicant will be part of a research team investigating form and function in fossil and extant cetaceans. They will direct and execute their own research program, including specimen preparation, data collection, analysis, and publication. As part of the larger team, they will contribute data and analytical effort to the research goals of that team. Techniques may revolve around morphology, hard- and soft-tissue histology, imaging, and computer analysis of quantitative data.

Principal Functional Responsibilities
1) Data collection and analysis of using CT and other imaging data
2) CT-scanning of non-human biological samples
3) Histological lab work on bone and soft tissue
4) Dissection of non-human samples
5) Assisting others in the lab with their research
6) Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education/Degrees:
Ph. D. or M.S. degree in biological sciences or equivalent training.
Experience:
5+ years in biological research environment
Key Skills, Personal Characteristics, and Key Competencies
Ability to contribute skills and effort to one or both ongoing wide-ranging research projects that investigate cetacean morphology and function from evolutionary and developmental perspectives.
Ability to take the lead on several smaller subprojects within the two projects.
Project 1 studies of evolution of brain size and hearing in Cetacea.
Project 2 studies chronological markers (such as growth lines) in bones and teeth of cetaceans.
Available collections central to this research include, one – anatomical, well-fixated samples of hard and soft tissues of extant beluga and bowhead whales, and, two – fossil samples of Eocene cetaceans from Pakistan and India.
Key Competencies:
Familiarity and background in one or more of the following techniques: micro-CT, 3D imaging, finite element modeling, hard- and soft-tissue histology, and immunohistochemistry. Strong analytical skills.
