Entry Level (Trainee) Behavioral Therapist

Registered Behavior Technician

The behavioral therapist is a paraprofessional who practices under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). The behavioral therapist's primary responsibility is to provide direct, day-to-day treatment of plans developed by a supervisor to clients in an effort to reduce maladaptive behaviors that interfere with the client's ability to have meaningful relationships, participate in social and community situations and events, and develop lifelong skills in key areas such as communication, socialization, and behavior. The behavioral therapist does not design intervention or assessment plans. It is the responsibility of the designated supervisor to determine which tasks a behavioral therapist may perform as a function of his or her training, experience, and competence.

Status:

Part-time (10-25 hours per week) Monday through Friday 3:00 pm-7:30pm

Responsibilities and Duties

Job Description:

  • 1:1 home-based intervention services based on ABA principles under the direction of the behavior analyst (BCBA, BCaBA) that increase communication, self-help, social and play skills
  • Accurately prepare data collection, implement measurement and recording procedures, and maintain data using online technology
  • Understand essential components of a behavior plan and implement behavioral reduction interventions (e. g., differential reinforcement procedures, extinction procedures).
  • Implement a variety of ABA procedures (e. g., discrete trial, naturalistic teaching, stimulus control, stimulus fading, discrimination training, use of contingency reinforcement) in accordance with the behavior plan
  • Effectively responds to and manages crisis situations which may include physical aggression in accordance with the treatment plan
  • Responsible for accurate documentation and reporting and effective communication with supervisor
  • Facilitate interactions with peers in accordance with the intervention plan
  • Meet student and environmental needs as required (e. g., lifting, bending, crawling, squatting, reaching, toileting, feeding, self-help skills, assisting with personal hygiene needs, and other duties as appropriate)
  • Assists in the creation of instructional materials.
  • May provide some training and support to junior therapists as required (Lead/Sr. RBT only)
  • Attends all staff meetings and patient care conferences as scheduled..

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS

All levels:

  • Has a High School Diploma or the equivalent, has completed 40 hours of competency-based training (may receive on the job), and has six months experience working with persons with developmental disabilities OR
  • Possesses a Bachelors Degree in either a related field (Psychology, Education, or Behavior Analysis), or a degree program in which the candidate will complete a BACB approved course sequence, and has six months experience working with persons with developmental disabilities

Trainee:

  • See above

Junior Behavioral Therapist:

  • Possesses at least has a High School Diploma*
  • At least 6 months experience working in the field of ABA specifically with individuals with ASD

Senior Behavioral Therapist

  • Possesses at least has a Bachelor's Degree*
  • At least one year of experience working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis with individuals with autism

Junior Registered Behavior Technician:

  • Possesses at least a High School Diploma (or equivalent)**
  • Must possess the RBT credential from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board and continue to keep RBT certification in good standing
  • Has at least 6 months experience as a behavioral therapist with individuals with autism

Senior Registered Behavior Technician:

  • Possesses at least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Psychology, Education, or Behavior Analysis, or a BACB approved course sequence degree program)
  • Must possess the RBT credential from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board and continue to keep RBT certification in good standing
  • At least one year of experience working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis with individuals with autism

*Candidate will be eligible for increase on pay scale if an Associate’s Degree and/or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is provided **Candidate will be eligible for increase on pay scale if an Associate’s Degree in a related field is provided

All applicants upon getting hired:

  • Will complete a reference and background check, CPR/BLS, first Aid, physical exam, immunizations (Tuberculosis [within the last 2 years], Rubella, Rubeola, Varicella, Mumps, Pertussis, and Hepatitis B), provide a copy of valid auto insurance, and provide evidence of degree and transcripts
  • Will have and provide reliable transportation and valid driver's license
  • Will maintain any credentials (i.e., RBT Certification) in accordance with the regulations of the credentialing agency without lapse
  • Will have and maintain access to reliable internet
  • Will take pre-employment assessment

Skills:

All levels:

  • Must be able to accept constructive feedback, demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, and decision making
  • Must be energetic, animated, and outgoing, with a passion for helping individuals with disabilities
  • Be openly flexible and mobile in order to move quickly and keep up with an active client
  • Ability to use computer technology and knowledge of various software programs (e. g., Google Sheets, Google Docs) and/or willingness to learn new software and use of adaptive equipment as appropriate
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to interpret and accurately implement clinical protocols as written
  • Must be able to organize and maintain time and manage multiple tasks
  • Must be able to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Commitment to ongoing training and development
  • Ability to demonstrate professional behavior by adhering to organizational policies and procedures (especially the code of ethics as indicated by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and HIPAA), and assuming authority appropriately

Basic & Physical Requirements

The behavioral therapist works indoors (mostly in patient homes) and travels to/from patient homes (required to be physically present at the assigned job location, which may include home, school, and community placements, and sometimes an office location).

ADA Requirements (essential functions)

  • Completing all components of Safety-Care training
  • Must be willing and able to restrain/hold/transport and utilize quick body movements as indicated in the Behavior Intervention Plan in the course of working with individuals with challenging behavior, as indicated in the treatment plan * Push, pull, reach in all directions, kneel, twist, stoop, crawl, and bend
  • Physically assist the client per the treatment plan and needs of the individual client * May require occasional lifting and carrying of 50 pounds or more
  • Walking stairs
  • Walking and standing for long periods of time
  • Stamina to play various outdoor games
  • Capability to run short distances
  • Ability to sit on the floor to play games or assist client when needed
  • Occasionally a work day longer than 8 hours
  • Must have visual acuity to drive safely (when required to do so) and to read and comprehend written communication through computer, electronic devices, and paper means
  • Position requires close work; finger dexterity; good vision, hearing, oral communication and critical thinking on a regular basis (Must have manual dexterity to perform specific computer and electronic device functions for data collection)
