Job Description


This position is ideal for a talented communicator with a flair for creativity and teamwork. (S)he will be responsible for oversight of the planning, content, and production of AFS’s award-winning magazines and digital magazine products that are “required reading” in the $48 billion metalcasting industry. The position will have regular writing and editing responsibilities for the organization’s various magazines. Special emphasis will be placed on the development and maintenance of the magazine websites and magazine-related digital communications. All content will include pro-manufacturing assumptions with frequent promotion of American Foundry Society members and the value of participation in the American Foundry Society. The American Foundry Society currently has a hybrid work policy.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the planning, production and printing of highly regarded industry magazines.
  • Plan, develop, and oversee the editorial content of the magazine, ensuring it aligns with the magazine’s niche in the metalcasting industry.
  • Coordinate magazines and related products for editorial staff, artists and advertising.
  • Accountability in helping grow readership and subscriptions.
  • Develop editorial and editorial direction for magazines and related products consistent with the AFS mission and strategic plan.
  • Coordinate print contracts in consultation with the Accounting & Finance Department and printing schedule with printer and staff.
  • Assist in budget planning, managing editorial expenses, and ensuring cost-effective content production.
  • Write and edit copy for the magazines’ websites and web-related communications.
  • Conduct in-depth research to stay updated on industry trends, innovations and emerging topics.
  • Review, edit, and proofread articles, International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC) ensuring accuracy, coherence, and adherence to the magazine’s editorial standards.
  • Supervise staff writer and/or freelance writer plus in-house designer.
  • Use websites’ CMS system to maintain and reconfigure websites.
  • Travel to metalcasting and OEM facilities, attend various conferences, seminars and committee meetings to maintain a presence in the industry and/or to develop editorials for the magazines.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to promote the magazine through various channels, including social media, newsletters and industry partnerships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills or Experience:

  • Journalism/marketing/PR degree preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of the metalcasting industry, its processes, technologies and trends.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Five years experience in trade magazine editorial, marketing, communication or PR preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as editing skills.
  • Flair for creative ways of communicating themes and industry stories.
  • Public speaking and presenting skills are required.
  • Passion for manufacturing and the value of trade associations is a major plus.
  • Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); publishing software (Adobe InDesign); art/digital image software (Adobe Photoshop); video editing software; and web CMS systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in basic web design and social media preferred.
  • Must be able to read and write in English.
  • Experience in managing employees, setting goals, providing continuous feedback, inspiring outstanding performance, and delivering performance reviews is a major plus.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work independently. Travel of up to 20%. Occasional evening/weekend travel/work.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands:

Required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger or feel objects, reach, balance, stoop. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The work is classified as Light Physical Demand Level (PDL) by the US Dept. of Labor’s Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Frequencies: Occasional (1-33%); Frequent (34—66%); Continuous (67-100%)

The American Foundry Society (AFS) is a non-profit association serving members of the metalcasting supply chain both in the United States and abroad. AFS provides members with advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., technical education through its Institute, as well as the transfer of innovative research and technology to the industry, its suppliers and those who buy castings. Membership is individual or corporate and is made up of three markets, including: metalcasters and producers of metal cast parts; metalcasting suppliers; and casting buyers/original equipment manufacturers. Student membership is also extended to future leaders of the metalcasting industry at a nominal cost.
