Position Summary:

The Research Scientist's primary responsibility will be to develop and lead a program of natural products science with the goal to develop novel food and beverage ingredients and innovative processing solutions. The scope of this role includes a broad spectrum of botanical/horticultural raw materials, with an emphasis on hops, coffee, and tea. The role will support various cross-functional departments within the company by providing technical leadership to Research & Development, Quality Control, and Operations. In addition, the work will directly support a key strategic growth area around sustainable natural ingredients and will be accomplished by collaborating with members of the analytical, sensory, applications, and flavor creation teams. The Research Scientist will be required to identify and engage with external research organizations and academic institutions that can add value to internal projects. The role requires an in-depth knowledge of the food science and flavor chemistry components of horticultural products.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead internal botanical/horticultural science research program as well as external research collaborations.
  • Perform benchtop research in areas such as distillation, extraction, filtration, and concentration of natural products and raw materials.
  • Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting the scale-up or production of novel natural ingredients.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (analytical chemistry, sensory, applications & flavor creation) to achieve desired results.
  • Lead multiple projects independently in terms of planning, analysis and communication.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • BS degree in Food Science or related discipline (MS/Ph.D. preferred).
  • 5+ years experience in the food/flavor industry with practical application of scientific methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of horticultural science, in particular hops, coffee, and tea.
  • Experience with advanced analytical techniques is highly desirable, i.e., gas and liquid chromatography.
  • Extensive experience preparing research trial plans, executing experimental work, analyzing data, preparing trial reports, and disseminating findings.
  • Needs to show a high degree of proactive thinking and great organizational skills.
  • High level of communication skills: communicates clearly and concisely in both oral and written form.
  • Possesses excellent presentation skills, effectively translating analytical results into business drivers.
